well 1080p Blu-Ray players were announced at CES, also it looks like SED TVs are the real deal. I was in the market for a 50" LCoS Sony SXRD, but now I think im goin to wait till next year- as my main reason for buying a new set is the eventual release of the PS3.
What do you guys think of SED?...do you think the technology will mature by this time next year?

i was asking about it yesterday and from what i understand, the real quility SED's wont be around for 5-7 years. remember, there is always flaws in new technology. i would wait until they were out for a few years before buying.

The whole talk about 1080p TV's is pretty pointless in my opinion since there's not even a lot of networks that even presents shows or live event in 16X9 HD.
I don't know about the US, but in Canada, we get like 12 channels in HD and about 25 to 40% of the programming is in a 16X9 ratio. So yeah, HD TV does look incredible...when it's available.
I bought a 50" Panasonic DLP for like half the price of a Sony SXRD and the picture quality is almost the same on my TV compared to the Sony.
So who cares wich TV does 1080p? How many channels will broadcast in 1080p in the next 3 to 4 years?
Not even 20% of the current channels even have an HD version, so what is the big deal over all of these new tech anyway?
As far as movie goes, well, sure, if you can poney up 1000$ dollars and 40$ a movie to see a picture quality that will probably be the same or slightly better than a good DVD (in the beginnings of course), knock yourself out.
There's a point where you just have to stop and let the rest of the world catch up to the freak's of video/audio tech because there's a point where you just don't get your money's worth anymore.
Just my 2 cents.

What's with the sudden need to have a better technology right away? I mean, we go 20 years with VHS tapes and composite inputs, now we aren't satisfied when our TVs do 720p.

There's a Penn & Teller episode about this...
I know I feel like I need to upgrade my technology when I'm feeling down and in the dumps, or bored. I know I'm stupid for doing it, but it just makes me happy.

Pft. Some of us just compensate - that's why my TV is a 60" ;)
New tech is fun, just don't get too carried away.

Contrast ratio of 100,000:1 for SED television is crazy.
pascal_f1,
1080P displays will make even 1080i/60 broadcasts look better compared to the now common 720p displays. You dont need a true 1080P "broadcast" to get a real resolution improvement over 720P displays. And 1080i broadcasts are far more numerous than 720p broadcasts at this point. The bigger your screen and the higher the production values get ( better broadcasts ) the more need/want for a 1080 display compared to 720 display.

I dont see what all the fuss is about contrast ratio. Does it really matter?

Umm, yes, the better the contrast ratio, the better the set can do blacks.
