Has anyone been following this new audio format? Announced at the C.E.S. in Las Vagas. I'm wondering when this new format will be on the lastest receivers.

“……………………Dolby TrueHD allows owners of current A/V receivers equipped with Dolby Digital decoding to experience a significant improvement in audio performance when they connect their receivers to a next-generation optical player that supports Dolby Digital 640 kbps output. Consumers who own a receiver equipped with multichannel analog inputs will be able to experience the superb audio quality of Dolby TrueHD, coupled with the expanded capability for full 7.1 discrete channel playback. For the ultimate Dolby TrueHD experience, consumers who recently purchased the latest A/V receivers with HDMI(TM) inputs can experience lossless 7.1-channel playback via a pure digital connection…………….”

Your current receiver as described above will allow you to play this audio format when connected to the recently announced HD DVD players.

wifeB8, so what that is saying is that all I would have to do is run the optical audio cable from the HD-DVD player to my Denon reciever and i would have this new Dolby True HD?

What is it that makes Dolby True HD any different then Dolby 5.1 or DTS 5.1? thanks

Primarily, Lossless playback - in other words identical to the studio master and support for 24bit/96khz audio.
If you’ve heard DVD-A in the past that is an example of the quality that can be expected with these new HD dvd players/media.

Optical cable will not give you that ability, it will need to be HDMI and or the multichannel audio inputs similar to what DVD-A needs. The latest HDMI spec already supports lossless playback.

Ok, I feel kinda dumb asking this but.. I have a Denon AVR-886 Reciever. Do I have multichannel audio inputs on this reciever?

Look in your manual to see if it is DVD-A capable or look to see if you have 8 ch/6 ch. external Analog Inputs on the back.
Now remember the initial Toshiba HD-DVD players specs appear to only support 2channel DolbyHD. So at least initially it appears that you will only get 2 channel DolbyTrueHD support with these players.

No. You have 2 coaxial and 3 optical input. I Have multichannel inputs on my Onkyo in my signature.

Don't ask me how I'll be able to enjoy 7.1 on my 5.1 receiver though :rofl2:.

Ok, but these new HD-DVD players will still have Optical out correct? I just want to make sure I will be able to use Dolby 5.1 or DTS via the Optical audio. Thanks

For sure - it’s a standard. They will still use optical for Dolby Digital, and DTS.
We were talking about the new HD audio standards and what would be needed to decode it.

Will this work with the HD True audio? Here is what my manual says:

Audio/Video
• Adjustable crossover (60, 80, 100, 120, 150 Hz)
• HDTV-capable component video (3 inputs, 1 output)
• 3 S-Video inputs, 2 outputs
• 4 assignable digital inputs (3 optical, 1 coaxial)
• Subwoofer pre out
• Color-coded multichannel input for use with Super
Audio CD and DVD-Audio
• A/B speaker drive
• Color-coded speaker terminal posts

•

That should work.
