Shows like the Simpsons or Family Guy may go HD eventually but they're probably in no hurry to make the move. There's really not a lot of detail or elaborate design in most animated TV shows so I don't think there'd be much benefit in an HD version.

But....

doesn't a show, any show, need to be "shot", "produced", "made" in
high-definition before it can be offered as a truly "hi-def" program?
Aren't many shows 4:3 standard -definition and stretched or scaled
up to hi-def size but are not truly hi-def?

In other words: doesn't a program that purports to be in hi-def need to
have been shot with a hi-def camera that can achieve 1080 of active lines
per frame?

Hi-def camera or film for "live action".

With cartoons... it's a picture of a picture. So it would have to be 'drawn' with a 16:9 aspect ratio in mind and if it's recorded/transferred for broadcast, if would have use one of the mediums mentioned above.

Unless... it's computer generated.

If a "cartoon" were originally shot on film, then telecined to an HD tape and then shown on an HD station from that tape (typically 1080/24P), then you'd be seeing "HD", even if the programme is 4:3 aspect.

However, that is rarely done and more than likely any 4:3 programme on an HD channel is more likely to be a 480i upconvert.

Not all are however - for example, the movie "Elephant" was shot 4:3 OAR (original aspect ratio)

Anything can be shown on a HDTV channel. How good it looks depends on the limitations if any of the source material and mastering techniques of course.

RE: 4x3 films. Sure they can be shown on HD broadcasts in true HD resolution and even at true OAR ( black bars on sides of 16x9 frame), buts it very seldom done
at this point. Since virtally every movie made from 1900-1953 is 4x3, I suspect it
will done more often eventually when more networks like Turner Classic Movies go HDTV.

SD Cartoons actually look pretty awful on my 50".

Why? The black "outlines" they draw around color areas on shows like "The Simpsons" are simply too thick and border solid primary colors. I see tons of aliasing jaggies along the borders. I see similar effects when watching AdultSwim, especially in the case of 16:9 letter-boxed content that I have to zoom (GITS Stand Alone Complex, for example)

Now, it might be a function of my POS SD8000HD cable box, or my DLP... but I can definately see something. Even Fox HD, which is just showing upscaled SD content, looks awful.

So what would be an HD cartoon? Either a hand-drawn one, where the photographed cels are transfered to Digital with more resolution, or a computer animated cartoon rendered at higher resolution. Both would look better than upscaled SD.

That's a good point. I've got a 57" CRT and most animated shows, like the stuff on cartoon network, look great. But CRTs are more forgiving to standard def stuff. DLPs are so sharp I'm not suprised it wouldn't look so hot to you.

Do animated shows on DVD suffer from this too on your DLP set or do they look better?

Ramone,

DVD's are much better, but then then a DVD is double the resolution of SD, and is compressed much, much more lovingly.

Computer animated stuff like the Incredibles looks fantastic.

Some Anime DVD's don't look so great, but I am sure a lot of that has to do with poorly encoded DVDs from the likes of ADV Films.

you guys are confusing SD with analog NTSC. Cartoons should look fantastic on SD
which is DTV that looks very similar to DVDs. Regarding analog NTSC, EVERYTHING looks horrible on analog NTSC once you watch HDTV for a while, I dont believe its any worse than it ever was, it just LOOKS worse because your standard of quality is raised so much by the great HD broadcasts...

Regarding SD, I think it would be PERFECT for a lot of the older traditional cartoons, because it doesnt have all the problems and artifacts of the old analog NTSC broadcasts but has sufficient resolution for most of these cartoons which are not
really that detailed...Too bad the ATSC DTV SD formats arent being used very much...
