Since Kevin took my favourite movie, I'll have to go with my second choice Apocalypse Now (Redux or not).

Ridley Scott has been "redoing" Bladerunner (I have the various versions in various formats, but my Director's cut LD is my favourite). I'm not sure if the DVD's ready... He's also been working on Alien.

Saving Private Ryan is quality.
The second scene when the US invades the beach is just about the best dts audio demo I can think of. The visuals are great, and it's 1.85:1 which fills a 16x9 display perfectly. Oh yeah, it's a great movie too.

While it would never make a list of my favorite movies ever, Spiderman is the best looking DVD I've seen yet on my tv. Especially the night scenes. Almost gave me a 3D feeling.
Has there been a PQ advancement in DVDs in the last couple years, cuz the DVDs I've rented or bought of 2002 movies look much better than DVDs released from just a couple years ago.

My favorite DVD has nothing to do with video or audio quality, but nevertheless has some of the best dialogue i have heard in a movie. It is The Big Lebowski, :Dfunny as all hell. As for quality audio and video, i would have to say any of the episodes from the Band Of Brothers series(especially episode 2, the jump into normandy) or Blade.

Don't you guys ever listen to concert dvds?

My current favorites:

Eric Clapton One More Car
Diana Krall Live in Paris
The Concert for New York City

Movies: Not my favorite, but am using Goldmember to show off my HT. Awesome sound.

Also mentioned "Barelaked Nadies", by the Barenaked Ladies a while ago. Hours of fun music. Great DD5.1 on both of these.

The Bruce Springsteen complete video anthology is good, but the sound quality of the earlier work is a little "weak", especially in DD5.1. The sound on the second DVD of the set is much "stronger".

The Shania Twain Platinum Collection (Videos mostly) is also an excellent video collection (21 videos). DD2.0.

Based on how many times I've watched them:

I'd have to pick 'Willow' as my favorite DVD. It was my favorite on VHS and Laser Disc too. I still have the LD but the tape wore out years ago.

Next would probably come 'Star Wars'. 2 Laser Disc Collections and VHS (plus EP 1 & II).

Right now 'Harry Potter' and 'Lord of the Rings' are getting alot of viewing.

Beyond that it would be a very difficult choice, too many good movies.

For music: John Fogerty 'Premonition' and Fleetwood Mac 'The Dance'.

Absolute Favorite? I'd say a tie between 'Fight Club' and 'Boogie Nights'. I think those are the only two DVDs in which I have listened to all of the commentaries and watched all of the features.

Best picture would have to go to AOTC or Toy Story II (from my collection).

Anybody have Ghostbusters on DVD?

If so, push your camera "Angle" button on your remote and you'll see a sihlouette of the director and producers as they discuss things throughout the commentary. It's a pretty comical idea.

Plus, having the soundtrack remastered in DD 5.1, it sounds pretty nice.

I am going to get "The Last Waltz" this weekend. It just received an award for best concert DVD issued this year. I'm not sure who gave out the award but I read about it in The New Yorker. Depending on your taste in music try Bette Midler's "Divine Madness", "Bee Gee's Live", Steely Dan's "Two Against Nature".

I just got my Stargate UE... I love the new transfer. I recommend it to anyone who has the old version. In fact, there's a $5 rebate if you have the old disk!

Anyway.. my absolute favorite? It's got to be LOTR - Fellowship of the Ring. The quality of the transfer is excellent and the story takes me back to being a kid again. Love it.

Black hawk down...outstanding
Star Wars II...outstanding
Paul McCartney...Back in the U.S....outstanding
LOTR...Outstanding

honorable mention for
...Unbreakable
...Signs
...Aliens II
...off-shore imports of the early star wars flicks

...there are soooo many....

and while its "just" a laser disk, I have to mention my
favorite piece of concert video of all time...

Pink Floyd, Delicate Sound of Thunder ... out-freakin-standing
(especially for a Laser Disk)...in my next life I'm going to

I have not seen any movie reconditioned and remastered as well as the following two movies: Ghostbusters and Superman.

These movies look and sound better than some movies released on DVD today. It doesn't hurt that they both are quality movies, either.

Even though I'm a "Bruce-head" and not impartial, his "Live in NYC" disc is pretty sweet when played through a progressive scan player.

It's the first disc I played when I got my set/DVD player last week.

The "Faith Hill - When the Lights Go Down" DVD is probably one of the cleanest concert dvd's yet. Superb transfer! I think this was shot with HD cameras which would certainly account for the picture quality delivered on DVD. The bit rate hovers between 8-9 mbps the entire time. Never drops for an instance below 8. The audio is excellent as well. Not to mention the fact Faith Hill is extremely easy on the eyes. Definately has good replay value.

Few titles I'm looking forward to coming out next on DVD are "LOTR: The Two Towers" and the "Indiana Jones Trilogy".

If you have a good HT surround sound system then the ultimate movie to "show off" you home theater has got to be The Matrix. The Lobby Scene all the way thru to the helicopter smashing into the building just blows peoples minds when I play it.

FYI: For anyone not familiar with the database program I use head over to www.dvdprofiler.com . It is essential for any DVD collection. Just a word of caution: Two people I work with had their entire houses wiped out last week.

My good friend of the two of them lost nearly around 700 DVD's, 300+ CD's, all his audio equipment for two separate home theatre rooms excluding the tower speakers, all his video equipment excluding his 32" flat-screen TV.

Though they have a relatively low deductable they will still be losing in the DVD and CD area...they are probably only going to get about $10 per DVD as a compensation and there is a depreciation charge being taken off the equipment.

I'd make sure your stuff is locked up tight...and I wouldn't necessarially reccomend advertising how much you have online if you include your whereabouts.

Originally posted by BadCamper ...they are probably only going to get about $10 per DVD as a compensation and there is a depreciation charge being taken off the equipment. Get replacement cost insureance. No depreciation applies. You just replace what you had and present the bill to the insurance company. You pay a slightly higher premium, but totally eliminates hassles - you make an "inventory" of what you have - update it every year or two, and send it with your renewal to the insurance company.

If you don't have replacement cost, anything older than about 5 years is "worthless".

Good advice all around. You never know I guess. Replacement cost insurance is a very good idea also. I've had it in the past, but not at my current residence. Would be good coverage to have.

Yes, very nice collection. I was buying many DVD's for a while but now that I have a HDTV I'm gonna wait for my favorites at 1080. I might be waiting a while for the HD-DVD though. After seeing HD I am wishing I didn't blow so much $$ already on my favorites. It's almost as bad as the studios coming out with T2, then T2 Ultimate Edition, and now T2 Extreme Edition. What's next Superbit T2?

Lowpro
06-27-2003, 01:03 AM
I know what you mean. I've bought T2 three times now. :-P Damn am I a sucker, but I'm glad I did. Everytime I buy one over again I give my earlier one to a friend or family member, so it's all good. This last version of T2 is superb. For as old as this flic is it has to be one of the best transfers out there.

Can I just say however that the metal sleeve for the latest T2 is the most annoying thing I've ever seen. Just about destroyed the regular dvd case trying to get that sleeve off. What stupid packaging! Suprised I didn't cut myself.

Luke_L
08-03-2003, 03:17 AM
Funny you should complain about the metal packaging for T2.

The metal packaged Ultimate Edition ones are actually worth more then the ones made later because they went to a cheap cardboard-like material and not real metal.

When I say "worth" more I simply mean that it's more limited, less of it made, and harder to find. Actual street value I don't know.

In many places you'd be hard pressed to find the Ultimate Edition in the REAL metal case. Most are in the cardboard-like case which is made to look like real metal.

I made a big mistake getting Fellowship of the Ring in fullscreen a year ago (Old School as well). I'm going to be getting a widescreen HDTV in a month and it sucks the movies won't fill the screen. Oh well. If I get Two Towers I'll make sure to get it in widescreen.

BTW, when I get the TV I wanna get a DVD or two to really show off the TV. What are some good ones? Keep in mind, I would like it to be a good movie too (not just good visual quality). I was thinking about that Matrix and/or Gladiator.

The digital animations look better than any film dvd I've seen. Shrek looks awesome, and it's a very funny movie. Monsters Inc. looks great, and although it's a Disney kids movie, also is funny for adults. And the Toy Story dvds look good. All have great sound.

Some DVDs come very close to HD quality. Sometimes I cannot tell the difference, esp with anime DVDs.

I have to say The Fast and The Furious. But every collection should have The Matrix. One of my many favorite scenes is when they are in the black car with Neo. The dark and light with the rain and thunder. It's a scene where visual and audio come together perfectly.

Movie wise, Disneys "Dinosaur" for clarity. Cannot say enough good things about how good this looks.

Sound, Stings - "All this time" [Sept 11 2001 concert at his house in Italy] Just incredible. If you like sting this is an absoulte must.

Collections, The IMAX Space Collection and HBO's "From the Earth to the Moon" .. why ? cause I'm a space junkie.

Animation, "The Emporers New Groove"

Sound Effects, "Saving Private Ryan" Stunning in full DTS

Shorts, "Scrats Adventure" off the "Ice Age" DVD

Any takers ?

If anyone is a Led Head go check out the "LED ZEPPELIN" DVD. It comes in 2 channel stereo, dolby digital 5.1 and DTS. Sounds great. Check out "Dazed and Confused" when Jimmy Page whips out the violin bow on his Les Paul and listen as it circles around the room from one speaker to the next. Also like he way they seperate the croud in the rear speakers from the music in the front speakers makes you feel like you're at the concert. And if you want to give you're sub a good workout check out "In my time of Dying" Bonzo's kick base will shake the room. The video footage is good for one viewing but gets boring after a couple of times (there is only so many times you can watch Robert Plant stick out his crotch in his hip hugging bell bottoms before if gets old) but its is a great listen and works well while playing a rousing game of Madden '04.

No. I was talking about the new one that just came out a couple of months ago "How the West was won". It was just released is taken form concerts ranging from early shows at Royal Albert Hall, Madison square gareden and lots of other concerts throughout their 10 year history. It is 10 times better than the "Song Remains the Same" both visualy and the audio is state of the art. It was mixed by Jimmmy Page. Go to any Best Buy or Sam Goody and ask for the Led Zeppelin DVD (It has no title, there is a picture of a desert on the front). If you are a Zepplin fan like me it is a must have.
