I thought I'd pose this question to some of you here that are more informed on this technology..........
With Dtv moving to mpeg4, will the HD pq be better or worse than it currently is? I've tried searching for some info but all I can find out is that it will be advantageous for the provider as it seems to "bundle" all of their media more efficiently. I know that Verizon is using mpeg2 for video in their FIOS service (which will be a long ways off for me where I live).
I was told by one person that the video will be more compressed by mpeg4 which can't be better.................can it?
Thanks..........

MPEG4 is a newer method of compression that allows a smaller amount of bandwidth needed while still retaining the same PQ as MPEG2.
The hope is Directv will pass full resolutions once they convert to MPEG4, with MPEG2, they have a lot of their channels cut down to 1080x1024 instead of 1080x1920 to keep the bandwidth down because they currently don't have enough bandwidth to carry all their HD channels at full resolution.

Correction :
Make that 1280 x 1080
Instead of 1920 x 1080

Thanks for the link, 57U. Now I know that "pwns" is an idiots way of typing the word "owns". Even so, it makes no sense to say that a display format "owns" anything so I guess I'll just ignore this and every other post by Damax.

OMG thehouse. You are suppsed to use it in that context. All that means is that MPEG4 is better than all other video compression algorithms. Just check out nforce.

Thanks for the replies.......
Word has it that FIOS video won't be available in my area til sometime in 2007. I'm leaning towards DTV HD but want to get all the facts before committing.........along with waiting for the new equipment they'll be putting out.
Meanwhile, I'll suffer along with the two OTA chans I get
