Scott,

Concerning your first post. I would agree with you. Having had both a CRT RPTV and a DLP Front Projector (fixed pixel 1280x720).

With the CRT RPTV and DVI and CV input, I couldn't really say I saw a difference. I had borrowed a Samsung SAT box to test. This was some years back (2002) and by the time better STBs came out I had upgraded from the RPTV to the FP. It might be interesting to revisit the tests, my daughter has the Toshiba 65HDX82 but she doesn't have HD OTA in her area and only uses the TV with a DVD player. And it is too blasted big to drag home again :) I had to split the cabinet to get it into her basement. Actually I have a lot of HD content recorded on the Tivo, I could take the Tivo there :)

With my FP and a HD Tivo using HDMI > DVI adapter and CV input. I could definitely see a difference. I am holding off buying a new receiver/pre-pro that has HDMI switching so I use only component connections for now. It is for convenience and family friendliness.

I would say the difference I saw was; HDMI > DVI was a sharper more crisp image which looked great for sports. The CV was smoother and I liked it better for movies. The HDMI for movies made them look grainy.

I would agree with IMRF and the best case would be for the SAT/Cable boxes to have native passthrough. The SAT/Cable box does nothing to the signal and the Display does all the deinterlacing/scaling etc. Sadly, my HD Tivo does not have native passthrough, you have to select 720p or 1080i.

How one interprets PQ is so subjective, don't be concerned about responses you get to your posts. Everyone has an opinion, I do and I'm not always correct...... but I try to learn.

I'm in this for the fun, it is a hobby for me and "most" people who frequent these forums.

Oh and I tend to ramble a lot :D Sorry

The best advice I could give you, let it be. Getting into a pissing contest does no one any good.

See also the bold paragraph in the HDTV FAQ on "DVI/HDMI Information".

Thanks for the reply. It really wasnt meant to be a pissing contest I just wanted to make certain that what I had in my head was or was not correct. I am currently helping my brother decide the best tv for him and it goes right along with this info.

I was trying to answer the guys question. The original poster said that he wanted to know if HDMI was worth it. I think that before we can answer that question we also needed to know what kind of tv he is using. He never even said.

I agree with your statement. I have had experience with HDMI four times now and each has been positive. The HDMI out of my HD Tivo to my projector. HDMI out of my Samsung 950 to the projector. The HDMI out of a friends HD Tivo to his projector and his father's HD Tivo to his 40" JVC LCD (panel or direct view whatever its called :) )

In each case there have been no issues. The only instance we used the audio was with the JCV and that worked fine. Just one cable for the video and audio, pretty slick.

If I was buying a new display, HDMI would be on the list of features.

A little off subject, when I upgrade to my new receiver/pre-pro it will have HDMI switching. It will also support HD DVD audio decoders (DD/DTS). At that time I will use the HDMI out of the HD Tivo and HDMI out of the HD DVD player. Component will still be used for the HD Camcorder, GameCube and 'normal' DVD player.

Good Luck and enjoy!
Lee
