We've only had ours for a month, but considering the $4000 investment, I thought a UPS or a surger protector might be a good idea.

Just curious what most people use? Does a surge protector protect against power fluctuations? In the event of a power outage, I certainly don't need to keep watching the T.V.. What are the advantages of a UPS over a surge protector? Can anyone make some recommendations?

If you have a TV that has a fan which keeps running after the TV is turned off, like an LCD or DLP-based RPTV, then a UPS is a very good idea, to keep the fan running and the bulb life longer in the event of a power failure.

You can pay anywhere from say $50 to $500 depending on your budget. A UPS will have a "VA" rating. This rating should be TWICE, the wattage of the item(s) you plan to plug into the "battery" side of the UPS. 350 Watts - 700 VA...

This has been discussed many times before on this forum. A quick search should find lots of previous threads. Use the keyword "battery".
