There's an article on Yahoo News claiming that HDCP connections (and built in tuners) will be the only way to view HD broadcasts in 2009 and component video will be downscaled to 480p.

I have heard HDCP will be the only way to view the new DVD formats, but I had not heard the same for cable/sat TV.

Does this sound right to you?

I heard this on the radio about a month ago... the announcers saying that old TVs (i.e. the old anolog CRTs we all have somewhere, in use or not) would basically become good for little more than picking up emergency broadcasts and weather stations.

Their take on it was yes, this is what they're claiming, but they expect enough backlash before 2009 to hopefully change it. the 480p bit is new to me, and in fact I've heard that if you (like I) have a 1080p set that doesn't have the specific 1080p inputs, the only way they'd be ablet o deliver it would be component cables since the HDMI standard doesn't yet account for it.

Anyway, that's all the knowledge I have on the topic... sounds like the downgrade they're talking about is solely in the boxes tho, that the component outs just won't push higher than 480p, and my guess is there will always be high quality electronics available which do.

The scare to enabled HDCP and downrez component outputs to 480p has been brought up many times. It is possible to do, we just don't know if and when it will ever happen.

skiflier - For your first point, low price ATSC tuners will be available for older sets before the deadline, the deadline also only impacts anyone getting reception OTA, it doesn't impact cable and sat users.

The downgrade is possible, it's got nothing to do with the electronics, it's all about the copyright protection...
