View Full Version : 360 problems with 1080i on 4:3 HDTV

I have a Philips 32PT83 4:3 HDTV that supports 480p and 1080i, and have configured the XBox 360 for 1080i.

Unfortuantley, it seems as though I am not seeing the entire display. In Perfect Dark Zero, for example, I can only see about half of the weapon/ammo info on the right side of the screen. In Project Gothem Racing, I can only see about half of the car name info when I'm in the Garage - also on the right side. No problems at all with Call of Duty (although there may be information missing that I don't notice because).

Is this a TV calibiration issue? An XBox 360 video driver or hardware issue? Or perhaps a game developer issue? Any ideas?

As far as I'm aware, the 1080i spec requires widescreen, period.

Check the manual - it'll probably say something about requiring a 16:9 TV.

That's not true. Many 4:3 HDTVs have a "16:9 mode" sometimes called vertical compression. This uses all of the 1080i capability of the TV "squeezed" into the 16:9 area of the TV. The STB, console or DVD player should be set to 16:9, even though you have a 4:3 TV.

Unfortunately many direct view TVs have huge amounts of overscan and that's likely to be the OP's problem.

I wondered why the hell they would have such a thing - seemed kinda silly. (My Toshiba in my bedroom has it)

Does your TV have a 16:9 mode button?
