If a TV supports 1080i can one assume it will support all the resolutions between 420p and 1080i?

No. read the manual that comeswoith a TV Most will l not display 720p but do 4801,480p and 1080i. &20p and 10801 or Highdef.

The manual that comes with your television should tell you what can be done. Most tv's do not do 720p output but up- convert to 1080i.
