Just bought a hdtv and i am having comcast install a hd cable box so i want to have the cables ready when they get to my place. i still deciding on hdmi or component but i'll probably just go with hdmi.

i am wondering if i get hdmi to hdmi or hdmi to dvi or something else. do i have to call comcast to see what type of connection they have on the type of box i am getting or will all hdmi connections hook up to dvi connections.

also any recommended cables that are decent cables but for someone with a budget. i'm willing to spend more than a couple of bucks but don't want the overpriced monster cables. thanks for all the help.

As you said: You'll need to know what kind of equipment you're getting. Then get a cable to match your outputs/inputs (e.g. HDMI-> HDMI, DVI->HDMI, DVI->DVI etc. etc.).

Another thing to conisder is the number of inputs. For instance, I only have one HDMI input on my TV, while both my STB and DVD player have HDMI output. While swtichers are available, for the time being only one component is hooked up.

Don't waste your money on monster cable. Many on this site recommend monoprice (www.monoprice.com)

I have 2 motorolal 6412's

The newer one just received last week had HDMI and OPTICAL and COmponent. And some rj-45 connections for ethernet and usb.

The older one had DVI and component.

If you're getting the Motorola 6412, make sure you get the phase III box which has the HDMI connection. It resolves a lot of the analogue picture quality issues that were present in previous boxes.

See the HDTV FAQ "DVI/HDMI Information" for lots of links for cables and an understanding of DVI/HDMI/CV, etc...

The 3412 also has hdmi connection and latest firmware so if they bring you that one you are ok too (if you are all digital/simulcast). If you hookup the STB via hdmi make sure to leave the STB on at all times. You will avoid alot of problems this way. I gave up (kids, nanny, wife would turn off STB by accident) and hooked up STB via component and hooked up DVD via hdmi. Not much difference anyway. FYI, Comcast provided me with both hdmi and component cables at no cost (for the hdmi I had to go to local office to pick them up).

Just check your box and see what it takes. Naturally, if it takes HDMI, use that. HDMI provides the opitmal picture quality and cables can be picked up cheap.

Check out monoprice.com for good cable deals once you figure out what you need. If you go the HDMI/DVI route, it's digital, you don't need any fancy cables, just the data to get from point A to point B for maximum PQ.
