upscaling DVD player versus HD-DVD or blueray

Is HD-DVD better? If HD-DVD will play old DVDs I assume it's just going to upscale them which is no different than the current lot of upscaling DVDs do, right? I'm assuming the excitement behind HD-DVD is the hope that all new DVDs will be released as HD-DVDs, right - or am I missing something?

HD-DVDs will be encoded as HD - for example 1080i. This is their appeal. Todays DVDs are encoded as 480i. Upconverting DVD players convert this signal to 720P or 1080i, however, when you start with 480i, you are limited as to how good the end product will look. It's just like comparing upconverted SD and "true" HD.

I believe both new HD-DVD technologies (Blu-ray too) will be backward compatible with today's DVDs.

HD-DVDs will be more costly than "regular" DVDs, and the production of regular DVDs will continue.

I don't think HD-DVDs will cost any more (or not much more) than regular DVDs...there's only so much that people are willing to pay for a movie I think, and it would be a mistake for them to charge too much.

I can remember when a VHS movie was $50 - $90. If the consumers want HD-DVD or whatever the companies can price them high then lower it like other technologies do. Just look at game consoles and PCs.

I wonder how long it will be before most of the movies are being released as HD-DVD.
I've been trying to decide between buying a good upscaling DVD player now or waiting and buying an HD DVD player. I know I can buy an HD-DVD player soon, but I'm wondering how long it will take for HD DVDs to become available.
