The USB is "active" but it doesn't do much. You can connect a keyboard and use it to change channels.
The Firewire ports are not active on any SA DVRs at this time. A couple of people at AVS have apparently managed to get it working on occasion, but not reliably or consistently, so the answer is no.
The SATA port on the SA8300HD does work and you can connect an external drive. The instructions are on this forum. A search for SATA should find them.
