they really pushed for me to buy this in the store for $ 199 but i declined. i have a sony 42 lcd projection. should i buy this, probably cheaper elsewhere. they said not only will it protect bulbs from power failures but also filter your picture and give you an even clearer picture. is this true or is it a scam with them trying to move these things?

Do a search for Surge Protector or UPS* on this site. Lots of recommendations. It is a good idea to have a UPS of some kind in case of power failure, to keep the fan on the TV running.

Flashjeff and I bought the Tripp Lite Home Theater UPS HT1500UPS at Staples for under a $100 bucks. It has surge protection, backup for the fan cooling and line conditioning. So far, so good.

Why don't you go to Tripplite's website for comparison.
I just mentioned the models I have as a suggestion...you're welcome.

when hooked up, i had a few channels on my cable that i could not receive and a few that were really fuzzy. i called cable company, they came out and said the problem was with the ups battery backup tripp lite box. they disconnected the box and just ran the cable wire directly to box and the hdmi cable to tv. everything works fine now. they said its a signal problem when ran through this box. should i just leave this disconnected and just use the surge and battery backup only? it supposably has a line filter in it as well to help clarify my tv picture. i cant tell if there is a difference or not with it not hooked up or not. my question is, is the picture filter part of the coax connection or is it ran through the power cords? if i just hook power to the box and not the cable wire , will that delete the filter? HHGREGG said the cable company is crazy, it should not affect your signal. well, it did, i watched them diconnect the box and i received my channels back and the fuzzy channels cleared up greatly. should i return this, it was $199.00 and find something cheaper or am i still getting quality with just the surge protection and battery backup? the model is Tripp lite HT100LCD. :headb:

Many folks have decided not to run the cable through their surge protectors and the like...I don't...it causes problems with the cable channels in many cases. :)
I use the unit for line surge protection, conditioning and battery backup for my LCD RPTVs bulb cooldown only....good enough for me.

Yes, you will get protection from more than just surges, you will have the ability to keep your fan running to cool your bulb if the power goes out, which helps bulb life.
I have never heard of a surge through the cable system as much as a surge going through the electrical wires, so don't fret over the coax connection.
Additionally, the unit is supposed to act as a line conditioner, too.

Keep it. :)

that was my question, is the line conditioner the filter that is supposed to clear up the picture a little, part of the coax or is it in the power supply? so if i do not use the coax to run the cable through the surge box will i still get that filter?

Nothing is there to "clear up the picture a little." The different filters will remove noise on the signal and power lines. Only if (1) they exist and (2) are so substantial as to affect picture quality will they have any potential to improve the picture.

The line conditioner is just that-a POWER line conditioner that filters the power line, not the coaxial line.
I found slightly better electrical preformance from it, not cable performance.
No, its just that when you use the coax cable part, that part gets screwed up.
Hope that this clears it up for you.

it shows a side by side picture of the clearer picture from using this product, so is this deceiving ? its not really there?

Pictures from advertising/marketing is not always 'truthful'.
Such as the food on TV commercials never look the same (or palatable) when you actually go to the restaurant and receive the food.

Kal and gparris have provided accurate info. Not to worry.

Not all such signal line filters screw up the signal.
