Hey all, I am curious if you folks can help me out. I recently purchased a Toshiba 57HC85 that was on sale for 999, the reason being I sold my old Toshiba 45 inch to my brother who....ahem...burned a video game image into it.
Anywho, since getting the tv I have noticed a red glow on the sides. I did some research and ended up finding this site, which was very helpful (I called HH Gregg and employed my extended service warrenty in terms of them coming out to adjust the convergence).
With all of that said, I am now looking for a good DVD player. Ever since my first run ps2 came out, I have been using that as my DVD player, as such I have never even owned a progressive scan player, let alone one capable of HDMI usage. I don't use discs other than store bought DVD's (I don't burn DVD's or use Divx, etc), so I don't need the player to be all that multi-talented. Also, I don't have a 5.1 surround sound setup
(though way in the future I might think about getting one if I can find a reasonably cheap one).
I have been doing research on various players on this site, other sites, in stores, etc, and I am ready to finally buy A player, I just don't know which player. I have read that the Toshiba SD-5780 is alright, but the SD-5790 is on Amazon as well (Amazon being where I must shop in order to have any "choices" in my final selection). I have also read about the SamsungHD-850 being alright, but no stores in my area carry it, or the 5790/5980, in stock. Lastly I have read good things about the LG-115A (I think that was the model), which IS carried by Bestbuy, but according to them, no HDMI cord is in the box with it.
So, here I am banging my head against the wall :P. I am not wanting to spend more than 120 dollars on the player itself, and I would basically consider it a must for the player to come with an HDMI cord (although the distance from the back of my TV to where the player would be is less than 3 feet, so it need not be a long cord).
Aside from that, I am also thinking about getting an ADIA DVD, as although my tv is being adjusted in a few days, I have read that my model TV in particular tends to need re-adjustment over and over until at least 200 hours of usage.
I am willing to manually adjust things AFTER the HHgregg guy comes out and I can watch him run through the service menu a time or two, but for now I am focusing on getting a new DVD player.
Also, how worried should I be about "Handshaking". I only read about this today, and I know that someone said in my TV manual it gives you a proper startup order to avoid this issue. However, would different brand players cause this? In other words, should I favor a Toshiba brand player on a Toshiba TV in order to minimize risk of handshake?
I would appreciate any opinions that are given. In my time reading the forums, I have noticed the old rule of different people prefer different things, so I grasp that what is important is what looks good to me personally. However, as no stores in my area carry any of the selections I am thinking of (save the LG), let alone carry the ADIA disc, I am curious what you folks would suggest I purchase given that I plan on doing all of this through Amazon.com.
Thanks!
- P.S. I am in no financial situation to think of buying one of the new HD-DVD players, let alone the HD-DVD's, so the focus of this post is mainly finding a good HDMI capable progressive scan player that upconverts well.
