If I am watching a show when scheduled recording starts to record the box changes to the channel it is recording. Happens even if it is recording 1 channel. Is there a way to stop it from doing it? I think it might have started doing it after I added external hard drive but not sure.
It should only do this if you're doing two recordings at the same time, since that requires both tuners.
Try a hard reboot of the unit (unplug for 10 seconds, replug, wait 1/2 hour). The external drive shouldn't cause this problem. See the HDTV FAQ "Tips for SA STBs.

I can tell you that mine has recently started doing that too and I haven't changed anything, have no external drive, no software change. I haven't rebooted yet, but I will tonight before I go to bed.
I used to get a "warning" that a programme was about to start recording in two minutes, but it would only switch channels if I was "live" and both tuners were needed. Otherwise, nothing happened. They may have screwed up the new firmware...
If it happens while watching a prerecorded programme, you should be able to hit the "last" button and it should take you back to the "PVR channel" (950 with us).
