View Full Version : Simultaneous PCM/DD 5.1 output on Samsung DVD-HD850?

I have the Samsung DVD-HD850.

I'd like to use the TV's speakers to supplement my center channel. Often, it seems as if my dialogue is "drowned out" during movies (even with dynamic compression turned on).

However, since I'm currently outputting DD 5.1, (and my connection is via HDMI), there is no audio output to the TV speakers. I doubt it's possible, but I was just wondering if anyone knew a way to simultaneously output my audio to the TV and my receiver?

Does the player have analogue audio (red/white) outputs? You could connect those, although that would send "all" the stereo sound.

A better option would be to properly balance the center speaker in the receiver setup. You have voiced a complaint that many on this board have also. Boost the center channel by perhaps a couple of dB, relative to the other channels. Have you used an SPL meter and the receiver setup (or AVIA or DVE) to properly balance your speakers? If you have, you may still wish to boost the center a couple of dB. I do this myself.

Remember that the ears are more important than an instrument. I found my LR channel to be a little high, even though it was properly balanced, so I dropped it a dB.

For now I'll take your advice and bring the other channels down a notch. I've been out of the HT scene for a while and lack the setup equipment you mentioned so I'll rely on the technology of the human ear.

I haven't tried connecting analogue audio because I'm using the HDMI input, and it doesn't have a separate audio input.

The TV has optical output so I may experiment with that to see if I can somehow pass a DD 5.1 signal to the TV, and then back to the receiver. As always, thanks for the input.

Digital audio will not 'passthrough' the TV. You must connect either digital coax or optical from the DVD player to the audio receiver.

How is the audio currently connected to your audio receiver?

Right now the DVD is connected to the receiver via optical.

But the TV has an optical out.

If I could get a digital signal to the TV (from the DVD player), couldn't I just connect the optical out (from the TV) to the receiver?

No... as stated, digital audio will not 'passthrough' the TV.

Clarification: Although digital audio may pass through the TV, DD5.1 WILL NOT, as Ratman explained. You need to connect directly from the device to the AVR to get DD5.1.
