Per this article the Sony BDP-S1 won't ship til August 15th and the Pioneer BDP-HD1 will be out in September at $1500 instead of the original $1800 MSRP. Samsung is still set to go June 25th with their player.

To update, according to Sonystyle (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start?CategoryName=hav_bluraydiscsub&ProductSKU=BDPS1&Dept=tvvideo&INT=sstyle-hav_bluraydisc-deptfeature-BDPS1|sstyle:sy_cat_content_p:hav_bluraydisc) the launch of the BDP-S1 has been pushed back to October :headb: .

I know that this has been said elsewhere, but I don't want people to read this one post, and be disapointed in August. I'm waiting for Denon to release a universal HD player. It may be a while, but I'm not chancing hundreds, just to end up with a Betamax.

It would be interesting to find some "inside" information as to why these players are being delayed! With all the manufacturing power a giant corporation like Sony has, It must be for some sort of technical reason. Id be interested to know if they are having unsatisfactory results with their digital converters or something. Of course the Samsung was released with no support for dual layer Blu-Ray discs as well as (i believe) no support for HDMI 1.3 either. http://www.hdmi.org/press/pr/pr_20060622.asp Of course not that I have a TV that is HDMI 1.3 compliant either!

Again, if you have hard information stating the Samsung player can't do dual layer discs, please supply it. I've been able to turn up nothing supporting your claim personally.

Other than Sony, Pioneer, and Samsung, what other companies are signed up to produce BD? I remember hearing LG might be, but haven't heard much from companies like Panasonic, Philips, Apex, JVC.

The Samsung player CAN play dual layer disks! Part of the Blu-Ray spec means part of every machine.

Hmmm, well according to the thread about blu-ray hardware announcments, it seems that Panasonic has signed on to blu-ray. Joining with Sony now, but wasn't it Panasonic that made VHS and made Sony's Betamax a failure?

Sorry, JVC is the creator of VHS. Then RCA marched in with VHS 4-four tapes. Can you see a pattern here RCA is with Toshiba. I can see JVC releasing a HD-DVD player too.

Before any HD player was released most were backing Sony's BD technology because it looked good on paper. Well guess what BD is still just theory and many BD backers are now looking at supporting HD-DVD, why? Poor BD titles, unreliable BD-ROM technology, expensive players, the list is long and it going to take BD tons of changes to get to HD-DVDs performance and price range just to get to same level as HD-DVD. BD slogan "Beyond High Definition" talking about false advertising; but in reality some of it's DVD releases look better then BD, now that's SAD to say the least with $1000.00US to $1500.00US players to boot. The problem isn't the players not even Samsung. Samsung is using the same decoder chip as the Toshiba player, it's the poor BD titles. Since Sony is the patent holder on MPEG2, their greed for MPEG2 royalties has limited their vision as even Sony has said that MPEG2 offers equal or better PQ in their studies. Well anyone can now compare BD to HD-DVD and HD-DVD offers the best PQ money can buy. Sony's solution for a cheap BD player is the PS3, if that's the case how is Pioneer's $1500.00 player and Panasonic's $1300.00 player suppose to sell with poor BD movie titles? The only thing the BD fans have now, is hope.

Sony has been taking about 50GB media for the Studio's for years, currently BD 50GB ROM media for the Studios has very poor yields from insider information Sony is going through 100 BD-ROM 50GB discs to get 1 good disc and even if Sony releases BD50 media it going to be at a major loss just to say, "See we Delivered BD50 media to the Studios", which will be in very limited supply with those heavy losses.

In the Computer Industry, Intel did the same kind of thing with the P4 CPU. Back in 2001 Intel said that the P4 with hit 10GHz by 2004-5. Well it's 2006 and the P4 hasn't hit 4Ghz. Deja Vu, Sony's BD-ROM 50GB media. I did read that BD-ROM 50GB media for the Studios may take as long as 3 years to straight-out the media problems with good yields, you know Sony's greatest line, "Wait". So currently Toshiba offers the largest HD ROM disc for the Studios topped with over 95% yields, to boot.

Since Sony is full of smoke and mirrors, I don't believe a word that they say until it's on the store's selves.

Toshiba has delivered in all fronts. The Studios are producing over 95% yields with DL HD-DVD 30GB ROM media and making money on them. HD-DVD players are half the cost, has the most advanded AV codecs in the players and delivers the best HD picture I've ever seen on my 1080i 65" HDTV. Toshiba has fixed many issues some people had with the HD-X/A1 with firmware releases it's currently at v1.4. Myself I haven't had a problem with v1.0. The only thing Sony fans have against HD-DVD is that Toshiba is losing money on the player well that's false too. Read this on HD DVD losses false, unification makes sense says Toshiba exec. "Yet Another Delay for Blu-Ray Players, Says Chinese Paper

And the delays keep coming for Sony's Blu-ray high-definition DVD system. China's Commercial Times newspaper is reporting that Sony's production facilities have not been able to meet the demand for the diode that generates the blue laser at the heart of the HD system. Both Sony's own plants and those of Japan's Nichia Corp., the only two suppliers of the diodes, have been plagued by production problems, the newspaper said. The supply problem, it observed, could not only delay production of Blu-ray DVD players for Sony and other manufacturers, but could also delay the release of PlayStation 3 models, now scheduled for November."

A little different take with this article implying that Sony might actually be spreading the rumor so that it may have enough of these diodes for its PS3 launch. Either way if anyone doubts who is running the BR show here is another example of who the boss is on the BR side.

So are the 2nd generation HD DVD players (A2) going to be released before Sony puts out there first Bluray player?

wifeB8

Depends on which Toshiba model you have your eye on. The A2 is scheduled for the first week in Nov, and the XA2 is scheduled for late Dec or early Jan. So the answer could very well be yes. Of course the BR side will counter that the PS3 is Sony 1st gen BR player but even so it might come in a coupe of weeks after the A2 is released if the shipping dates hold.
