STB = Set Top Box (receiver/tuner)

A DTV-STB (Digital TV Set Top Box) is a separate box with an HDTV tuner. Your TV is HD-ready, but doesn't have an HD tuner, so it needs a DTV-STB to convert the signals and send them to the TV. An HD cable box will do this, or an HD satellite receiver, or an HD off-the-air tuner.
