OK. This is going to be long but hopefully someone has had similar issues. I bought my GWIII in Feb 2004 with a 5 yr extended warranty. The set had been perfect until 2 months ago. I did have to replace a bulb but I that is not my issue. I had a red fingerprint size spot on the screen. I called Phillips Priority Service whom I have the warranty through and they setup an appointment with an authorized Sony service center.

They came out for appointment 1 to replace the light engine. The problem was fixed for about a week. Then a green spot appeared in a different spot. I called the service center and they were shocked that it happened again and stated they would send out another light engine and the one that was put in must have been defective.

So appointment number 2 and the engine was replaced again. Then within 15 minutes a blue spot appeared. At this point I felt like saying what the heck, lets get the rest of the colors out of the way and be done with it. Anyways I called back and then again they stated the engine is bad and they have to replace it.

So appointment number 3 and the engine is replaced. A couple of days later and you know what is next, a couple of green spots are visible and a faint blue spot is on there as well. So this time I called Phillips Priority Service back and they said they will try and send another service center out and see if something could be done. My patience is at the point is boiling. That service center then said they need to come out and see what the problem is. I called Phillips back and asked what will be done this time and they stated that if the service center deems the set unfixable they would buy out the contract of the warranty. This means that any cost of parts to repair the set would be deducted from how much I bought the set for and they would send me the difference. Now this quite a joke being that the parts have never worked. Why would I pay for a part that is defective????

Anyways appointment number 4 comes from the second service center and they attempt to "Clean" the light engine and of course this is not smart being I heard these engines are cleaned in a clean environment in a lab. SO.... he cleans it and its worse. I called the original service center to ask what I should do next and they said they would call Phillips for me. I got a call a few days later and they said they wanted to replace the engine for the "4th" time. I am clueless at this point because what will this do that the 3 previous attempts will do.

SO....appointment number 5 and the engine is replaced again. A week goes by and I am surprised that no spots are visible. So I get ready to prepare my letter of thanks to the service center for their help and guess what. A RED SPOT AGAIN!!!!!!!

I am going to call the service center again tomorrow and talk to the owner whom I spoke with before and ask what he thinks now. We'll see what happens but has anyone had any problems like this before???? I really need to know if someone has so I can find out how things turned out.

I'll tell you this....I will never buy a Sony product again. I have read so many threads on defective LCD parts its ridiculous. From bulbs, to engines, etc.

I will once this is all done whether they buy the contract or replace the set write a letter to newspapers, news stations, Sony themselves, and anyone else I can think of.

It sounds to me like there is something else in the TV causing the light engine to fail. What they should be doing is checking all of the other components in the set to make sure that everything else is functioning. One bad resistor can destroy even the best electronic component. :headb:

Have the service center check out the other parts of the TV connected with the light engine. I can understand one part being DOA, but 4?!

The last suggestion I have is to look into your states lemon law. In California, if you have the same repair done three times in a given period, the item is considered a lemon, and the company must replace the unit, or allow an upgrade.

If Philips does buy out the contract, make sure that you are only charged for one light engine. The fact that these engines were DOA is not your fault, and I guarantee that the service center sent them back to Sony as defective (never actually paying for them, so why would you).

Hope this helps,

Well after a long battle with this TV and Phillips Priority they have decided to buy out my contract. They are taking my total price at 2999 minus any claims which is 1 light engine and labor. My total in a check being sent to my house is 1706.48. So at this point the spot I have currently is not that noticable unless i get within 2 inches and the screen is completely black. I can live with that. Now if the engine goes bad again I will not have any support so I will have to pay for it. What I am going to do is keep the money in case this happens. If I go with a repair center that will do any repairs then they will be responsible for the defective parts then. Not a 3rd party who doesnt care what happens. I realize that if Sony had been the warrenty place then this would have never gotten this far. After the 3rd replacement I would have had a new TV. Either way I feel I won the battle since I got more than half the money back for the TV. If the 1 spot either goes away or just stays the same and no others appear I will be satisfied.

Glad you can live with the set the way it is as if that is all it is, that is pretty good.
I will carefully review my GWIV for any problems, but I bought mine at CC with an extended warranty and will expect great service or a replacement.
