View Full Version : Spots on the SXRD screen?

Okay im not exactly sure how to describe this but occasionally I'm seeing "spots" in the center of my screen. It seems to be visible when the screen is white in that area, or maybe just a solid color. Hmmm the spots dont have color to them so its hard to describe, I just know that I only notice it in the very center. Would this have anything to do with the slightly green tint I have on my screen when the input is completely black on screen?

The slightly green tint is due to the fact that you probably haven't had your TV properly adjusted for greyscale. See the HDTV FAQ "What you need to do to your new HDTV".

The "spot" could be a small bit of dust on the light engine.

Well I have the Avia disc and ran all the regular tests... I dont think I ran any grey scale tests though.. Are you talking about the settings for R gain, r bias etc??

Proper greyscale can only be achieved by an ISF technician going into the service menu, using appropriate equipment. With the user settings and a setup DVD like AVIA, you can usually get your TV to an acceptable viewing mode.

What you are seeing has nothing to do with calibration. It is an problem that all rear projection TV's exhibit to some degree or another. Over on AVSforum.com, what you are seeing has been termed "SSE" or "Silk Screen Effect".

Not everyone can really see it, but it does show up most easily when there are large areas of bright solid color on the screen (in particular with standard def material). This "sparkly" appearance comes from the make-up of the plastic lenticular screen used on rear-projection sets in order to improve brightness. Sets with glass screens don't exhibit this effect (plasmas and CRTs) and for the most part neither do flat panel LCDs.

Oh okay, thanks.. So its not a blowing dust off the lamp issue then huh? Yeah to be honest, unless you really know tvs or had known about it before hand you wouldnt even notice it on my tv... Its only at the very center of the screen in a little patch of area.. I dont think i've noticed it on HD material yet, just on DVDs (through upscale player). So at least I know its nothing too major =)

Okay, well I just bought a Sony SXRD a few months ago and everything seems to be fine except for this one thing. I dont really know how to describe them other than calling them "spots". They have no visual color nor are they super obvious. Generally I see them when the screen is bright in the center or when the screen is a solid bright color i can see them well. Its almost like a patch of them towards the center of the screen. The closest thing I could maybe describe it to is if I maybe had opened up the back of the tv and put my fingerprint on the bulb and now sometimes the bulb projects these little "spots" type things on the screen. Im not sure if its dust on the bulb or not, im just hoping this isnt a serious issue. Anyone that could help me out would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Ya know, that really doesnt help me very much. Stands to reason if i didnt get the answer I needed in the first thread I wouldnt merge the 2 with my new thread. Geniuses. I love how people have time to rename my thread, and move my thread, and merge my thread but dont have time to post a ****ing response.

Your new post (7) wasn't significantly different than the original post in this thread. That's why they were merged. You even seemed to acknowledge in post 6. If people had any other ideas, they probably would have posted them.

You're welcome.

The mods don't have ALL the answers. Their job is to keep the forum from becoming a wasteland of random, off topic threads. I have been to other forums where there are 4 or5 active threads talking about the same exact topic. Don't get angry at the mods from doing their job, when the 'community' doesn't have an answer to your problem.

I'm sorry for responding, but this is one of the most organized forums I have been to. Thank you mods for keeping it that way.

What more do you want them to say? "Silk Screen Effect" is what you are describing/seeing. There's really nothing more to it than that. The only solution to it is to get either a plasma or an LCD instead.

With my free time, I've decided to post a response (for your benefit).

If your set is under warranty, why not have a tech come out to check/clean your new TV?

Just some input from a genius.....;)

...and btw chief, no one "renamed" your threads/posts. This is the existing thread/title. The merged thread title was not that much different.
"Spots on the SXRD screen? "
""Spots" on my screen"

Good luck with getting your "problem" answered/resolved.

Well I've never noticed it on any of the other projection tvs or the SXRDs in all the stores ive been to. And the set is under "warranty" but I dont really wanna pay a lot of money for some guy to come out and look at it. Maybe i'll just try to clean the lamp.

Huh?

If you have a warranty, there shouldn't be a charge for the warranty work.

Well its past the 30 warranty that Best Buy offers. I dunno, does Sony offer a 1 year warranty with it? I dont know if that would cover a tech coming to look at it though.

Ratman

Yes it will!

If there is a problem within the one year warranty (or 90 days), it will be fixed. That's a warranty. The warranty period should be detailed in your manual.

Best Buy doesn't have a 30 day warranty. They have a 30 day return/exchange policy. Quite different.

Sony has a 1 year warranty ,Standard! I would have called by now!! Why waste time asking how to fix it when you could call Sony, and they will fix it for FREE.??

Hmmm, I'll have to call Sony and see what they say. The guy who posted in my first thread said that SSE was something indicative to this kind of tv so I dont know if Sony would even fix it. I can at least call them and ask. Although Im still not 100% convinced that the problem I have is SSE

Although Im still not 100% convinced that the problem I have is SSE

That's why you should get things checked out to your satisfaction while it's stll under "Sony's" warranty.

Why is this difficult?

Well I've never noticed it on any of the other projection tvs or the SXRDs in all the stores ive been to.
This should be your motivation.

PoppaPump

Oh its not difficult, I was just repsonding about the SSE in regards to earlier when someone stated "what else do you want to know, someone already said it was SSE". Thats pretty much all I was saying there. I've moved the couch back 1 foot from where it was and it actually looks a little better so far as the "SSE" issue goes. The resolution also appears to be a tad better also. I'll call Sony and see what they say
