Black Bars on HD Channels

I have a Scientific Atlanta DVR HD Box from Time Warner and a Sony KDF-E50A10 which I purchased today. When I go to ABC HD I have to use the stretch function through my cable box is this normal? otherwise I will get black bars on the side. What is the configuration most have?

The black bars on the sides are normal for upconverted SD programming on the HD channels. True HD is 16:9 and will totally fill the 16:9 screen. I assume some of the channels have true HD on them. ABC does also, mostly in prime time. See the following HDTV FAQs:
