I have a rather nice HDTV which I want to keep nice for quite some time... currently I have it plugged into a battery UPS. Specifically an APC http://www.apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=23

But, I need to retask that UPS and replace the one for my TV... my question is, obviously the UPS is better than a surge protector is better than nothing... but is it what I really want for a TV, or are the devices which don't provide the battery backup but deliver clean power more important such as http://www.monstercable.com/power/lineUPS.asp (or do the battery ones do this too?)

Do I just need a $.99 surge protector, do I need the UPS, do I need something fancier? Help please.

Thanks!

The UPS are good if you have a LCD or DLP HDtv it will give you additional time to turn off you set and allow it to cool down with internal fans which preserves the bulb, instead of an abrupt power lose and higher risk of the bulb blowing. However, the Surge protector does what the UPS system does not and thats clean the electrical current for improved picture and protects from power spike that could burn out the set's internal circuitry. I suggest you get the Power Surge protector "&" continue to use your UPS system. Your current APC unit should work fine as a UPS but you definately need a Power Surge unit of some sort. You don't have to get a very expensive unit, Monster Power have quite a few under $400. However, Monster Power, Richard Gray and APC make units capable of doing both if you don't mind spending a few ducky's for it!!!

My $150 APC unit says that the battery backups are surge protected.

Is this different than what you're calling Power Surge?

Could you maybe toss me the names and/or links of the units you're referring to so I can dig through their tech specs? I'm having trouble figuring this issue out.

Unless you can get Mon$ter stuff at a very significant discount, other suppliers probably have what you want for less money. There are several previous threads on this subject in this forum. For example:

http://www.hdtvoice.com/voice/showthread.php?t=15698

For the UPS portion you need a VA rating that's roughly double the amount of Watts you wish to plug into the battery outlets - 300 W, 600 VA required.

For surge protection, basically, the more you spend, the more protection you get (taking the Mon$ter pricing out of the equation.) Nothing "consumer oriented" is going to stop a huge surge and nothing will stop a lightning strike, outside of unplugging your stuff.
