View Full Version : HELP!! Sony KP-57WS500 Convergence Gone

Maybe someone can lead me in the right direction. Turned on my Sony 57" today and it worked fine for about 20 minutes then the kids started yelling "SpongeBob is in 3-D !! " Obviously that was not the case but it appears the "green" bulb's convergence has gone crazy in is all over the place.

I turned off the TV and went into the service mode to see the convergence and the green is all over. It appears maybe the red and blue are out as well. They are so far off there is no way to bring them into alignment.

Question , anyone have an idea as to what blew? Can it be replaced? I am looking to either do it myself or use the TV as a boat anchor. My first thought after reading the forums is that it could be the "convergence board" ??

The set was purchased in 10-2002 and the extended warranty is out.

Thanks in advance for the help.

This is a classic problem of blown convergence ICs and has been discussed many times on this forum. A professional fix is usually around $300, while you can buy the parts (2 ICs and perhaps a few resistors to replace any that have blown) for less than $100.

See the Sticky at the top of the Hitachi forum on Convergence Problems.

Ok...thanks for the link to the Hitachi thread.

I have the back off of my Sony and it looks nothing like the Hitachi and after looking it over I do not see the IC's. Does anyone have experience with this specific brand or model?

Thank you.

I read the entire post in the Hitachi forum. However, no Sony owners chimmed in (at least that I saw). Anyhow I downloaded the service manual and decided to make this boat anchor a tv again.

Ok...here goes. I disassembled the TV and removed the D board that has the ICs on it. They are STK395-560 and I ordered 2 of them. They will be here in two days so I have to get busy to find someone to solder them in for me!

I have attached a picture of the board.

I will keep you posted.

If you're having someone solder in the ICs, have them check the resistors on the board to make sure none of them are shot, just to be safe.

replaced the IC's....had a local shop solder them in....WORKS LIKE A CHAMP!

Went into the service menu and set convergence...the set truly looks awesome.

Thank you for the info 57U

BTW....the IC's were the only thing bad...everything else checked out ok. Also...get a brush type lense cleaner and clean the lenses while your in there....my were very dirty. The tv is bright and clear now.
