Well, the title speaks for itself. Just wondering because I am considering buying a DVD player that will upscale all of my old DVD's.

If you visit the HBO website and download the schedule, you'll see which movies are marked HDTV and which ones are not.

DVDs are a consumer item. Broadcasters use Tapes. (HD (usually 1080/24P downconverted to 1080i or 720P), or SD and upconvert)

What does HBO being in HD have to do with you buying an upscaling DVD player? By the way, your TV most likely is already upscaling your DVD's for you to it's native resolution...

Using the HBO HD to compare what a dvd player with HDMI would do to my normal dvds.

I am using an Xbox360 as a dvd player not the best one. So I guess I just wanted to see how good are these dvd player that will give you near HD resolution.

Will they look like HBO HD ?

They'll never look like true HD, you're starting with 480 lines of source material and upconverting it to 1080 lines, the scalar in your set or DVD player basically has to fill in the blanks on the fly to generate 1080 lines. There are various methods used to upscale which can be found online...
