Is it a waste for me to get a HDMI DVD player if my receiver doesn't have a HDMI input? My Toshiba TV has DVI. All my reciever has is component, S-video, and digital/optical (sound) inputs.

I still want to utilize the DDS 5.1 surround sound.

Don't you always need at least two HDMI cables? One going from the DVD player to the receiver and another one from the receiver to the TV?

I mean can I use an HDMI to DVI cable from my DVD player to my TV for the video and still use an optical TOSLINK cable from my DVD player to receiver to hear DDS 5.1 through my speakers?

Thanks.

RE your last question............yes

However, if you're in the market for a new DVD player, the better ones will have hdmi on it. Doesn't mean you have to use it now.

Upconversion can make a difference depending on the DVD's creation or "authoring".
Not all DVDs look marginally better with upconversion, but I find many do.
Your AVR (audio video receiver) is fine for now.
For example, I use my Denon 3805, a fine AVR with optical out for DD5.1 audio and a DVI out on my DVD-1910 for upconversion to my HDMI in SXRD and it works great. :)
