I recently bought a new r60xbr1 set and hooked it up using a lg dvd player with up conversion hoping to get the best picture possible. But like many threads that I viewed the results were dissapointing. (very grainy with greenish hue) I also tried another input and the results were the same. My question is has anybody had great results using hdmi with this television. And if so what dvd player did you use. Thanks for any input.

i have the 50 inch sxrd with the Sony upconverting dvd player.. Im not sure of the model number but its the most recent one they have now.. 75 maybe? I think its a pretty good picture overall. I have to sit back around 12 feet to get a really good picture or else it looks kinda bad. Other than that I cant complain too much. The only complaint i have is that there are black splotches that randomly pop up on the screen every now and then, kinda like when yur at the theater and you see it just for a split second on the screen. Its nothing major, you have to look for it. One of the guys at best buy said that what I was experiencing is just an upconverting issue in the technology. So yea thats about all i've seen so far

I also have the 50 inch XBR1 and the LG upconverting DVD/VCR combo. DVDs look fabulous at 1080i and the player even does a respectable job upconverting my old VHS tapes. The only thing I'm not happy about with this player is the reception off the cable looks as you described... very grainy usually with a greenish tint. Because of this, I only use the player for playback and use the TV's tuner for live TV watching.

One watchout... Are you sure the player is set to 1080i? It took me a little while to find that button on the front of the machine. There's no setting for upscaling either on the remote or in the setup menus.

Cheers,
Fred

I was doing the HDMI upscaling thing on a Toshiba player on my 60 SXRD, life was good.

Confirm settings on the player then try the other HDMI input - might be something physical?

I did switch the output on the dvd player. I tried every resolution possible and still had poor results. Im curious what is your model # on your LG dvd player?

I figured it out. The LG dvd player was set at 4:3 from when I had my old Hitachi tv which was a 4:3 tv. Im surprised that would make such a huge change in the picture quality. Maybe my sony r60xbr1 was streching the picture. Anyway the picture looks incredable. This is a new tv for me and Im consistantly blown away by the
hd picture and now the dvd picture. Now its time to start working on that sd picture.[scary] Thanks

One thing I noticed that when using the hdmi connection the picture is as clear as component connection but the greens are heavily pronounced. Is this a common issue when using the hdmi connection?

It will vary with the TV and with the (lack of) calibration of the HDMI input. See the HDTV FAQ "DVI/HDMI Information" (point 2).

I popped the Avia disc in my DVD player and did a quick color adjust using a pair of THX blue filters. The color looks great on all pictures. I do, however, still have the slightest green tint on a solid grey screen. I'm ecstatic with how the picture looks while watching movies. I'll still probably have a tech come in and do a calibration to work out the green after the TV settles in a bit more.

I got a Toshiba HDMI upconvert DVD player hooked up to my 60" XS and looks great. Though my Toshiba DVD player is very slow in responding to the remote singal and pressing the buttons on it. I wouldn't recommend it. I'm sure Toshiba has fixed this issue since my DVD player is a good year and half old if not two by now.
