I recently bought a Sony DVD player with a HDMI output. I have a Sony TV as well which has a HDMI input.
Now, here is the problem,I have a A/V receiver which has no HDMI input but I would like to take advantage of my HDMI input/outputs on my DVD and TV in the hope of getting a better picture.(I currently use Monster's Component A/V cables which are doing a decent job as-is)
So, I am planning to connect my DVD and TV thro the HDMI cable for a better picture and a Digital Optical cable for audio. I want someone to tell me that this is a better setup compared to what I currently have before I invest in more cables.
Thanks for your help

Doubtfull you see an improvement, but you can try. If you haven't yet used a HT setup disk, Id suggest usung one.
I am also venturing to say that the DVD player is most likely an up converting one. You would have to use a HDMI cable to enjoy the upconversion.

Correct, my DVD player is an upconverting one. Is this why you would think that I would not see an improvement?
I recently bought a Boss Acoustimass 15 HT system as well and I am unsure if I am using this system to its fullest potential and hence my questions.
Thanks for taking time to answer my post

Your welcome. You should see an improvement with DVD's but not anything else. You can't get the upconversion unless you use a HDMI cable.
I would also suggest you do some searches on Monster and BOSE on the forum. Please do read the FAQ's.
See the HDTV FAQ on "DVI/HDMI Information". You can pick up cables at places like Monoprice for relatively little money - $10-20.

I bought monoprice cables (a HDMI and a digital optical cable) for about $22. I made all the necessary connections and quickly tested them. I found that I couldnt really see any visual difference nor did I notice any improvement in the sound quality. Just for the record, I have a 36inch Sony HDTV (CRT), a Sony upconverting DVD player and a Bose HT system.
I might keep the cables because I am lazy to mail them back but if anyone is in a similar quandary then I strongly urge you not to spend any money on new cables. Your component video cables are equally good. :boo2:

In the case of a CRT set, that's usually the case...
