Last year before Christmas, we were at Best Buy and were "looking" at HDTV's. When we saw the Samsung 55", were were stunned at the picture quality. Being a former appliance store employee, I asked the salesman What they did to get this Samsung to look as good as the Hitachis, Mitsubishis and others.

He went on to say how Samsung is a very good product and can easily hold it's own against these other sets.

Now, when I worked in the appliance store about 10 years ago, you couldn't GIVE me a Samsung anything. Samsung was junk. So, I was very impressed with what I was looking at.

Low and behold, that Christmas Eve day, a truck pulls up to my house and my wife says, "Merry Christmas." I now have a Samsung 55" HDTV parked in my living room.

Returning it was not an option as I have returned too many things that she decided to get without my say so. She said, "Now don't go taking this back!"

I was torn between loving the set and realizing that I was now an owner of a Samsung product. I had to do some research....

I found that people in the "know" deem Samsung a worthy set.

My question to any of you is "What do you know about Samsung that I should know?"

It's been a little over a year of problem free viewing, but I'm wondering what kind of pitfalls I should be looking out for...

Any comments?

Nick, welcome to the forum:

If you look at the reliability numbers for some sets, they are higher than others (in Consumers' Reports' tables for example). If you look at the reliability numbers, you'll also notice that the "failure rate" is "relatively" small, meaning that the vast majority of people don't encounter any problems with their TVs.

You are obviously one of the latter and can be pleased that your wife bought you a product that made you happy and has operated well so far.

There's probably not much you can do at this point except sit back and enjoy.

If you haven't done so already, check out the FAQ section - 7th one down on the home page. Even though you've owned an HDTV for a while, you may find some interesting information there.

I'm old enough to remember when "Made in Japan" meant it was junk. Now people spend extra for Japanese cars, etc. Samsung has become a quality company. I've had their OTA HD decorder for about a year. Bought it as a demo model from Best Buy. A great device. Never a problem. Enjoy your TV.

I am still a little wary of samsung products. On Display out our store we have 10 Samsung HDTVs. Out of these 10. 3 are completly dead and awaiting service, while a fourth still functions but the menu button is jammed and the menu can not be accessed even with the remote.

Thanks for the welcome! :)

Interesting.... Well, from this thread, I'll assume it's a decent product except for those those three at Leth's store LOL!!!

I went with the Samsung because I have a 27 incher in my garage that's 14 years old and still has a great picture if that helps anyone. :D

Wife bought me a Samsung... Should I be scared?

If my wife bought me a TV I'd be checking all the fenders on the car :D !

Can't add anything that hasn't been said. If its gone a year it will go many more.
