I have a sony 50A10 and I am trying to figure out if 720P or 1080i provides the best picture. I read somewhere that some TVs have a native resolution of 720p while others are set at 1080i. Does anyone know what is the native resolution for my set?
I have HD from direct tv, which provides the option to select between 720p and 1080i from the reciever. Some programs look better with one format, but overall it appears that 720p is best. I also read that if the TV has a native resolution of 720p, that it will compress the 1080i signal so that it is 720p. If that is the case, then I might be wasting my time setting my direct tv reciever at 1080i.
Thanks for your help.

1280 x 720 Pixel Resolution
Your decision should be based on your eyes, not on the specification of the TV. Many TVs, even those with native resolution of 720P, seem to prefer an incoming 1080i signal.
Also, remember that most stations broadcast at 1080i and that the TV may be better at the conversion than your STB, although I'm not sure how/whether DirecTV does any conversion on their own. See the HDTV FAQ on "HDTV Formats".
Note that your 50A10 passed the bobbing test, below. Had the results been different, my answer may have been different.

Thank you for your response.
I must admit that I am still a little bit confused. Does my TV actually handle 1080i, or is it a waste of time setting the TV up the receive that format. The reason why I ask this question is that my direct tv receiver allows you to select the format as 480i, 480p, 720p, or 1080i.
Your TV will ACCEPT 1080i and the signal will be converted to the native resolution by the TV, as it is for all incoming resolutions.
You may therefore set the STB to 1080i or 720P and see which you prefer.

I have the same tv.1080i and 720p have very little picture differences! over all ,720p seems to handle fast moving pictures a little better, but nothing that you would even care about .Both 1080i and 720p look great on this tv ,So enjoy!!! and Yes Native is 720p on this model. You will be happy with this TV!
