Hi all...
Picked up this unit at Costco the other day. It's an upconverting DVD/VHS recorder.
Reasons for purchase:
1. Decided it was time to retire my almost 6-year old non-PS DVD player - and I was just itching to see if the upconverting feature would make a difference on my 50" Sony RP LCD.
2. Have about 60 old VHS-C tapes that I wanted to copy to DVD.
3. Starting to amass a collection of DV tapes that I also wanted to copy to DVD - the player has a DV input.
4. If I didn't like it or it was defective - Costco has a great return policy.
Results so far:
Upconverting feature.
Set the resolution at "Auto" - my TV indicates it's being fed a 1080i signal.
While I don't notice a HUGE increase in PQ - I have to say that images are a bit sharper and colors are brighter - whether this is due to using the HDMI connection - upconverting - or a combination of both I don't know - but I am pleased with increase in picture quality. (My old DVD player was connected via component cables.)
I also have to say that the audio quality seems a bit better too - I'm using the optical out on the unit to my receiver - I disabled the HDMI audio out.
VHS-DVD recording.
Picked up a bunch of DVD-R's and recorded 4 VHS-C tapes to 1 DVD - very easy and the quality was good. Still have about 55 or so to go!
Haven't tried hooking up my DV camcorder to it yet - that's next.
So, overall I'm pleased with this unit's performance and would recommend it.
I continue to be impressed with this player - esp. the video transfer features - very easy and almost intuitive - the User's Manual is not the greatest - but once you get the general idea, the on-screen menus walk you through each step.
