I have a Sony Grand Wega 46 inch LCD Rear Projection, KDF-46E2000.

This is my first HDTV and I noticed while watching sports in HD that when they show a wide angle of the stadium, the crowd appears to "shimmer". I also noticed this effect when there is a pattern on the TV, for instance, someone is wearing a white striped shirt or a plaid shirt, it apears to "shimmer"

I was wondering if this was a common occurance? Am I just being too critical? Is it just the limitations of my TV or the signal? It's not really a large concern for me, more like a small annoyance.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone else has noticed this.

Thanks,

Andy

This is called moiré (pronounced Mwa-ray) from the french word for silk.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moire

You should NOT be seeing moiré on (true) HD programming. If you are, it's an indication of too much edge enhancement. Turn down your sharpness and turn off any "edge enhancement" features on your TV like velocity modulation - Stay away from the "Vivid" mode for example and use "standard" or "pro" instead.

See also the HDTV FAQ "What you need to do to your new HDTV.

Some Widescreen programming is not HD, so moiré can be seen on this upconverted widescreen programming, as well as on SD programming, although it will be lessened if you follow my advice above.
