what do you guys think should i wait for second gen HD DVD players or get one now i would like to get the A1 but i hear they are slow plus some HDMI problems god knows i don't need those so should i buy a standard dvd player via HDMi to upconvert my movies until more HD DVD players come out to fix all the bugs oh and i have a huge collection of standard dvd's is it true that upconverting old dvd's is only a good thing if the upscaler on you're dvd player is better than the one on you're tv.

Split thread from official HD-A1 thread, please refrain from posting questions or information not directly related to the topic of the thread. Thanks

I would say wait for a good deal on the 1st Gen players. There have been a couple already as evidenced by some posts by others. Not only do you get an HD-DVD player but also a great upconverting player as well. Haven't really heard horrible things about HDMI just slow load and lockups that seem to be mostly resolved from recent updates to firmware.

I also heard (elsewhere on this forum) that Toshiba is planning on releasing a new firmware update that will allow DD TrueHD 5.1 and the like. I am willing to wait until the players support the new HD audio.
Also, from what I've been hearing, the firmware updates have taken care of most of the reliability issues with the A1.

My advice is that the Toshiba HD-A1 is the best upconverting player out there and I have both the LG and Denon upconverting DVD players and neither does as great a job on a standard def DVD for picture as either of them. As for bugs, many of us in the forum have not had problems with our players and the upgrades are easy to do once you get the hang of it, if that becomes necessary.
Get the Toshiba - Best Buy often has a 10 or 12 per cent coupon that comes out and get it on sale.
Then get your favourite movie on an HD DVD - just for fun - and be amazed at the picture and wonder why you didn't do it sooner!
Just my experience and advice! :D

Thanx guys.
Another question I have is that if I were to get this HD DVD player, I would put it in a cabinet with a closed glass door.
I wonder if there would be any ventilation problems?
Also, how do you get the firmware updates?
I understand you can do it online, but I would rather do it with a CD. How do you get the CD?

With all that has happened since 8/18 (last post) a lot has changed. The one reason that I didn't buy the HD DVD player at launch, (lack of DD TrueHD 5.1) has since been fixed.
I was reading on another forum that the lack of HDMI 1.3 is a non-issue, because of the fact that the Toshiba converts the DD TrueHD into PCM, so you don't need a receiver that does the conversion.
So here is my question(s):
To those that have the player... what other features do you wish the HD-A1 had. I'm talking about things that are missing, that you wish you had waited for.
To those that are waiting... Why are you waiting? Is it cost? What features are you looking for? Are you waiting simply because of the 1st gen gitters? The reason I ask is because I just got a decent amount of money from my parents (for my b-day), and I will probably be buying one in a matter of weeks unless I hear a few valid reasons not to.

In part for me is 1st gen gitters but mostly cost. I was also hoping that they would come out with the 7.1 analog connections vs. the 5.1 since my receiver has both.
