Ok, Is the 50-inch too much?

I have a odd-shaped house and my den is relatively small. From my main couch to the place where the TV will be is roughly 10.5 feet. I could possible tweak that to 11.5-12 feet.

What is the optimum viewing distance for both TVs? I've looked and can't find it.

I don't want to get too much TV. The price of the 50 inch doesn't matter, I was looking to spend $2000 anyway on the TV.

Anyway, any suggestions on which would be better for my situation? Would I be sitting too close to a 50 inch HD to really get the experience?

Get the 50" as later you will regret it.
At 10 feet from the couch, the 50" diagonal set will resolve the HDTV experience for you and the 42" will seem no better than a cheaper EDTV in resolution.
Double the screen diagonal of 50" is about 8.3 feet, the usual distance I give clients for setup of screens of this size...so I allow about 8-10 feet from the screen.
I have used this for many setups without a problem and if you make it more than 10.5 feet from the screen - definitely get the 50".
The Vizio 50" got a great review from a recent home theater magazine, too.

See the HDTV FAQ "How Large an HDTV to buy". At that distance 50"+.

Go for the 50". You got plenty of room. Plus keep in mind many programming is still in 4:3 aspect so cut off about 6" on the left and right side and that is what you'll be looking at most of the time unless you strech the picture out (which some do and some don't). You'll always regret going smaller and never regret going bigger.

I would also be comparing LCD-Plsma-DLP. I have the 37" Visio LCD in My bedroom. Fine for a bedroom tv but the HD picture is not as good as my Sony LCD projection 42" in my livingroom. I think for best Hd picture is as follows good to not-so-good. Plasma-DLP-LCD Projection-LCD.
