View Full Version : How Large is Your HDTV?
Not in terms of size, but how large is it compared to viewing distance.
For example, I sit roughly 11' (132") from my 61" Hitachi, so that's about 2.1 x Screen size.
How many "screen sizes" do you sit from your HDTV?
There is no right answer, this is just a poll.
Here is an FAQ on the subject:

Thanks for the poll, 57U, as I have often wondered what the rest of us were doing regarding viewing distance.
For example, with my 70" Hitachi, I sit 12.8 feet away
(2.1 x) because that is what the spouse allows, no closer :sobbing: ,
but it is a 720p set, so maybe that is better, anyway vs. a 1080p set for detail.
Now, with my 60" SXRD set, the distance is about 8.5-9 feet away
(1.7-2.0 x) depending on if we lean against the back of the bed which has a padded "sleigh" type headboard.
This distance is nice and easy on the eyes because it is 1080p (you can get the details out of it).
Even the SXRD even does a much better job of SD than my Hitachi at a greater distance, too, so no painful watching, even at that distance.
So there really is no perfect distance for anyone, depending on your eyesight and type of display and what you watch, but I think 3 x the diagonal is a little more difficult to get the detailed picture that is HDTV, at least to me. :D

Just got the furniture yesterday in the new house after a couple of months of living there. Never really got to watch the HD set there from what would be the normal sitting distance(used bean bags for some movies and video games but no serious HD watching).
Well after sitting down to finally enjoy some HD I look at my 50" set from a 4x screen size distance and say out loud the set looks kind of small from here, my son being the good son that he is concurs with me, my wife simply looks at me and says are you serious  you're never happy she says. I stutter and say  "it's just that i'm used to sitting a little closer is all" She doesn't get the whole seating distance thing.
The good news is that the plan is to finish a portion of the basement (50%) as a home theater with at least a 100 inch screen :pimpy: (ya baby). I am also gonna shoot for getting the Sony Pearl if it's all it's cracked up to be.

Well, I sit just about 10 feet away from my 52 inch JVC and the size looks pretty darn good to me!

I will be sitting (when the my KDS-R60XBR2 arrives) 12 feet away from a 60"display. I was going to get the 70", but I'm going to take the extra $2100 and get a new receiver.

My friend with her 52" 720p JVC LCoS set has a great time with her set at 8-10 feet watching it...but she has always wanted BIGGER!
You see, her house came with a combination TV/fireplace built-in - not like the currentl-offered "nightmare" design with the shelf over the fireplace to get bad necks.
Instead, the house has a small insert for a 50" 4:3 SDTV set.
This was nice at the time, but inconvenient as technology progressed to now.
The only reason she did not get the 56" JVC set was the width of the insert area.
I had the same model house when I moved and had a 65" Mits CRT RPTV on a side wall, not in a insert area like her and always appreciated the side.
JU1CYFRU1T, i recommend the Denon AVR-4306 for its versitility, fantastic sound and overall quality for the amount you are spending, based on my experience.
As for 12 feet away, the 70" set would have been more immersive, especially with the 1080p and I know that I can sit 8 feet away from my 60" XBR1 without any problems!
As for my 70" Hitachi is at 12.8 feet from the couch, but that's me. It gets replaced if it goes bad next year witht the 70" XBR2, absolutely. :D
