I've had this TV for 5 or 6 months now, and I've been disappointed. I'm not sure if it's an isolated problem with my TV or what, because I don't see many other people mentioning it. I get terrible, very noticable pixelation in fast moving scenes and scenes with bright or flashing lights. Is this a common problem with this TV set or should I contact Sony to see if I can get it fixed?

Maybe it's not your TV.....could be your STB, satellite receiver (depending what you have) and even more so....signal strength. Do you get this pixelation while watching DVDs or video games? If not..and it's only HD programs, I would have someone check your signal strength.

It's normal to have macroblocking and some other compression artifacts on HD programmes with a lot of movement - nature scenes, scenes with fire, scenes with strobe effects, lightning. This is an MPEG limitation.

A proper setup of the TV will likely help, but not eliminate the issue.

See the following HDTV FAQs:

- Why does my HDTV have poor SD PQ
- What you need to do to your new HDTV
- Definitions and Acronyms - look at the macroblocking/pixellation definitions
- Motorola or SA STB FAQs if applicable.
- Etc.

My set, hooked up to TWC's 8300HD DVR (component input) and Toshiba HD-A1 HD DVD player (HDMI input) works fine with SD programming, in fact, better than my Sony 60" LCD RPTV.
The HD DVD discs played on this set are even more exciting and realistic than even the HD DVR, but only if you actually can experience this. :drool11:
For example, after working out in the gym last night, I picked up the Discovery HD Theatre show from the Sony LCD 60" set and continued the programme to the Sony 60" SXRD set.
Sitting distance was 8 feet, same HD DVR and everything for BOTH sets.
I have a couch in front of the gym set for relaxing, so this is how.
IF anything, the SXRD gave a clearer, more detailed picture than ever.
I think you have your inputs, source or settings really messed up for your "situation". Even SD programmes are more tolerable, setup correctly.
Have you ever gone into the setup menu on your SXRD like I have, switched it from VIVID to PRO, then adjusted the settings in the DRC palette?
You should, honestly, as it does have settings (dot in the on-screen "box") to create better detail and less blurring and artifacting.
If this still doesn't work, check all input connections and cable strength (signal, etc.) before you exchange the set or have it looked at.
This set is nothing short of amazing, so its a shame you are not enjoying it, really!

I'm having the same problem with sports on a 1080i signal (i.e. NFL or Notre Dame football on NBC). Football on ABC (720p) looks incredible. To reduce the pixelation/macroblocking, I changed the signall on my SA 8300 HD to 720p, which seemed to help a little.

After reading all the instruction manuals I have and the HDTVoice FAQ, has anyone come up with the "ideal" setting for all types of TV programming (SD & HD)?
Everything from video settings to DRC to Iris to viewing mode (vivid, normal, pro)?

I'm sure what works on one TV should work on another.

...has anyone come up with the "ideal" setting for all types of TV programming (SD & HD)? Everything from video settings to DRC to Iris to viewing mode (vivid, normal, pro)? There are no ideal settings. There are good settings for your TV, your STB, your environment and for you, but each person/location/TV/STB/lighting, etc is different.

I can tell you that Pro will be the closest to the NTSC standard and that Vivid is "torch mode" and very far from that standard.

I'm not sure which FAQ you were referring to, but see "What you need to do to your new HDTV".

Sounds like its not the Tv, but its the HD Set top box, HD antenna, or Signal strenght....

I have noticed it also on some programming. Does anyone have the green blob issue? I am about to call a tech to come out and look at my set.Guess its time to change out the optical block. The entire upper right hand corner of my screen is covered in green.

Do a search on here and on the AVS forum. I don't own the TV but I have read about people that have this problem.

I agree 100%. The problem has nothing to do with the TV. It's the singal.

These sets, IMO, having had one for some time, display the highest possible picture, so if the signal is below par, even the best upconversion and processing may not help.
Not all HD programming on all HD channels is anywhere near perfect, so the set will display what it gets.
But I have to agree that it is the inputted signal and the connections, not the set.
