I recently bought a 32" Samsung LCD and got the Motorolla 6412 stage III DVR/STB. After hooking the two up via HDMI I decided I must get another 6412 for the Sony. Today I traded in the 6200 w/component for another 6412 s/III with HDMI. The Sony looks AND sounds better with the HDMI vs. the component. Many say there is no noticable difference, but there sure is with mine! Both TVs look awesome in HD and I LOVE using only 1 skinny cable vs. the 5 thicker ones, sure cleans things up! Just thought I'd give you my experience with the HDMI connections.

I have the same TV and noticed a similar improvement in picture quality with a new DVD player I hooked up using HDMI. Still using an optical cable for audio.

There certainly can be a difference between component video and HDMI, but it depends on the TV and the calibration of the two inputs. See the HDTV FAQ "DVI/HDMI Information" (especially point 2).
