Hey, new to the board here...have a quick question...

Alright, well I went to Sam's today and they had this Akai 37" LCD on the as-is rack, saying it didn't work. I bought it for $750. Now, before anyone jumps to a conclusion, I can still return it, I just thought I'd bring it home and see if I could do something with it. Here's the issue. You plug it in, and turn it on. The screen comes on. It is black, but its that backlit black (you can see the backlight on the back side of the set is on). No buttons seem to do anything, no menu shows up or anything either. After about 20 seconds or so, the screen will turn off and the light on the bottom will go to red real quick, then back to green, but the set stays off. Any ideas on what this could be?

Thanks,

Ross

No :)

Call for warranty service or return it.

Why would you spend $750 for something that doesn't work when you don't know how to even begin to fix it?

Wouldn't it have been better to test it in the store and then ask here?

Well the lady there didn't know what was wrong with it, so I figured I could take it home. I have some basic knowledge and have worked on laptop displays and lcd monitors and stuff. And why'd I buy it? Well, if you could get a 37" LCD TV for $750, would you do it? I also bought a Sony MiniDV camera for $150 today the same way, and got it to work fine.

I have basic knowledge of cars. But I wouldn't spend $$ on a car that didn't work if I didn't have an idea how to get it running.

Would I buy a 37" LCD that was inoperable for $750. Quite frankly... no. :)

I'd suggest you try to contact Akai "tech support" (and that's a loose term) and see if they can provide any suggestions.

Congrats on the MiniDV camera though.

Heh, I have a basic knowledge of cars too lol, and I did the same thing and bought a car real cheap and got it running.

That's besides the point. On a better note, I'm on the phone with Akai right now. When I called it said they were temporarily closed, but I just quickly hit 0 and it went to a menu lol. The guy said he's gonna send a service technician out to my house to take a look at it, and if they can't fix it here they'll take it back to a service center to fix it since its under warranty.
