THe only DVD player that I have found without costing an arm and a leg is the Samsung DVD960 that upconverts to 1080p. All the rest are 1080i. I would like to get a 1080p tv ie HL-S6187W from Samsung. Does anybody familiar with any other 1080p upscaler DVD players?

Whether you upconvert to 1080p or 1080i will probably make no difference on a 1080p TV, which will upconvert the rest of the way.

This is not an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray player. All source material (conventional DVD's) is 480i.
