We have a 50" plasma Samsung HDTV that we just bought.
Tonight we bought the Samsung upconverting DVD player (DVD-HD860).
I hooked it up via HDMI cable. I compared between 1080i, 480p and also 480i from our PS2 hooked up via S-video. I honestly couldn't see a difference. Old movies looked bad in every format, good movies looked good in every format.
I've also heard that the TV automatically upconverts anyway.
What should we do? Keep the upconverting DVD player? Or, return it and buy a component cable for the PS2 so it can have 480p progressive scan?
The TV WILL convert all incoming signals to its native resolution, probably 768P for a 50" plasma (you didn't state the model).
Depending on the quality of the DVD player, you can sometimes get a better picture with an upconverting one, however, as you noticed, that's not always the case and what you're saying is not rare at all.
What you do about the players knowing this is up to you.
Also, check out the HDTV FAQs:
What you need to do to your new HDTV
Burn in
Etc.
If the TV is properly set up, you may notice a difference. If you're running the plasma with factory settings in "vivid" mode, often the pictue quality is not that great.

the faqs didn't help me much as far as what I need to do to set up the TV other than to buy some discs.. but I used the Terminator 2 THX thing.. didn't change much. I changed it from dynamic (default) to custom which is basically same as the standard setting.
I'm thinking taking the DVD player back is best.. there's just not much a difference at all.

Samsung 50" Plasma HDTV (HP-S5053)
Yep, TV has a native resolution of 768P (click on the specs tab).
Sounds like a plan to take the player back.
The THX optimizer does help some with the setup of the TV. If you're happy, fine.
Also the quality of the DVD player plays a huge part, I had a Samsung unit for about 1 hour before I brought it back, It looked worse than my old JVC unit. But my Pioneer is leaps and bounds better than the other players I had.
So it is player dependant...

But overall the quality isn't all that big of a difference is it?

The biggest reason I found to keep my Samsung HD-850 was that it has a setting for 16x9 where my old DVD player doesn't. This way, when I play DVD's with anamorphic 16x9, it fits it to my wide-screen auto-magically!
I don't know about the Playstation, but I have an XBox-360 and it only plays in 480i :sightv: . Does the Playstation have a 16x9 setting so 16x9 DVD's will play in their special mode?

Did you flip the switch on the cords to HD?
