I have a 42" LG plasma thats a 480p, will I benefit if I buy an upconvert DVD player with an HDMI cable versus a progressive scan DVD (samsung HD841)?

Since the native resolution of your TV is 480p, you probably would derive no benefit by upscaling a 480i DVD to 720p/1080i only to be downscaled back to 480p for display.
