View Full Version : Question about screen size on my hdtv

I've noticed a few things with my 55" widescreen and am curious about some occasional screen sizes.

1. Occasionally I see a movie or game on one of the hdtv channels that cuts off the sides and doesn't use the full screen just like the sd channels. I thought 16x9 is a staple of hd (although I think i have noticed alot of shows on espnhd that ate not full screen)

2. This one drives me crazy. Why are some sd channels displaying in a smaller rectangle on my tv? I am used to the sides cut off on a normal channel but then every once in awhile something will come in with borders on the top and bottom. I can play around with the aspects and enlarge the viewing but why the small viewing area. Is it something with ratios?

1. There is lots of upconverted 4:3 on the HD channels. Not everything is HD. See the HDTV FAQ "What's on in HD".

2. That's simply a widescreen programme on an SD channel.

See the HDTV FAQs:

- Black Bars
- Widescreen stretch modes.
