View Full Version : 1080i Convergence Issue

Recently had my Panasonic televison serviced due to the IC board going bad. Everything on any input was all messed up. I got the TV back and the convergence on everything is fine and the picture looks great except when I view HD programming at 1080i. I can set my HD tuner to 480i and I have no convergence issues. But as soon as I try to switch back to 1080i the convergence is all out of wack. When I talked to the television repair shop they told me that this is a common issue with panny tv's. They said that they have contacted Panansonic directly and was told that panasonic has some sort of generator that they hook up to the back of the tv in one of the coax ports and it resests the convergence for 1080i viewing. They said that they have requested this generator from panansonic and that it is on national back order. However, the tv repair shop said that when the part comes in they will come out to my house free of charge to fix it. My questions are as follows: Had anyone else run into this? Is there a way to go into the service codes and do it myself?
Thanks
I have heard of similar issues on some other manufacturers, however, I thought it was simply a matter of having to do the manual convergence in both formats. For example, after replacing the ICs you go into the service menu and converge 480i, but then also need to do 1080i.
You say you got the TV back, so I'm assuming that "they" only did the one step instead of both.

The servicer simply did not bother or did not know how to converge the set on both scan rates. If he had a 1080i source available it should not have been a problem.

Ok, with that said, when I go to the service menu, how do I converge the 1080i source?

The same way that you do 480i. The procedures are rather obtuse for the Panasonics and require the service manual. Even having done a few myself and having done hundreds of different RPTVs, I still have to refer to the manuals for the Panasonic procedures. Check to see if someone has posted the procedures for your model previously. If not, I would suggest you get a service manual if you want to do it yourself.
Depending on the model, it might require an externally generated pattern, but I do not recall this being the case with any Panasonic sets. At most, IIRC, they might need sync from a 1080i source. Again, a specific model and the service manual would be needed to be sure. I don't do much Panasonic these days so I'm not sure.

Anyway, to reset TV to factory defaults?

Sandos, did you fix the issue? My Panny's 1080i convergence "went" one day but the 480i/p never failed. I changed the IC's, checked resistors and resoldered them, still no change. The user convergence menu doesn't help, the crosshairs cannot be aligned. Would changing the convergence in the service menu help?

no, i still do not have resolution on this issue...I have a guy coming out on the 7th of december to do a full blow calibration on my set..it runs about $375 but everyone I have heard that has done this is very pleased.....But I can only watch on 480 right now...it sucks.....

Actually in my case it looks like all I have to do is adjust the convergence in the service menu. I played with it for a bit last night and got it straightened out pretty good, still some work to do in the corners though.
