Hey guys,

I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with the sony Ruby (Sony VPL-VW100) and if so is it worth the price?

I'm in the market for a new projector (and my first one) and am wondering about the quality/price. I'm also wondering about the bulbs, how long are they lasting?

If you do have a Ruby, what kind of screen are you using? I'm thinking the da-light cinema countour cinema vision 100". Any thoughts.

If you have any recomendations, either to this projector or another, I'd love to hear them.

I'm also planning on getting the
HDTiVo
and Aperion Intimus 5.1 System D

I already own a denon dvd-2910

In the end its about another 10k investment. Just want to make sure I'm heading in the right direction

Sony's next generation SXRD projector, nicknamed Pearl, is on it's way out this month, as with any projector model line, it appears to be lighter (about half the weight), cheaper (MSRP of $4999), and put out better numbers (rated at 900 lumens) then the previous model. The main things it appears to be missing over the Ruby is it doesn't have Sony's DRC scaler for dealing with non HD sources. Hopefully the replacement bulbs won't be $1000 a piece for it either.

Just something to look into while you make your choice.

Thanks for the feedback,

I was looking around trying to research the VPL-VW50 and noticed it was already on sale. It was listed on the sony site as ready to ship, and even ebay had listings.

I was under the impression that it would be available later this month. Has anyone had experience, or seen a review of this projector also? Thanks for your help.

Ya it's out from select sellers, there are some reviews and threads over at AVS. It's getting high marks in many aspects and is said to achieve about 85-95% of video and image quality of the Ruby. The good thing is that it uses a standard projector bulb which would be about $350.00 to replace vs. the $1,000.00 Xenon bulb of the Ruby.
