View Full Version : Advice on tuning?

I have a new Toshiba 50HX81 set. I've had it about 4 weeks now. When I took delivery, I found the picture quality less than expected. When I was shopping for the set, the unit I saw in the showcase had a simply amazing picture. My unit at home was somewhat blurry, with a very noticable bloom on the blue, and moire patterns scrolling across the screen. I called the sales rep, and he put me in contact with the service agency ( I bought a five year in home service plan). The service rep came by and told me that my blue was ok, but he would do a full calibration for me. After he left (I was working and couldn't watch him work) the picture was a little clearer, but the color was ruined, with greys looking green, and everything washed out somewhat. The moire remains.

So I've been doing a fair bit of research, and it seems people talk about tuning new sets for best performance, and some even talk about taking off covers and focussing lenses etc. I used to service scientific instruments, including high resolution spectrophotometers, and I'm well aware of what a little knowledge can do to complex optics. I want someone doing the work who's knowledgeable and experienced.

Should I go direct to Toshiba asking for someone to do this work, or is there another association or professional referal system that I should go to?

Every review I've read says this is a top notch unit, I just want to get what I paid for...

(BTW, I'm using a quality system in front of the TV, Pioneer Elite Ultra THX reciever, Pioneer Elite progressive scan DVD, and DirecTV 6000 sat reciever, etc.)

well if you want to go with a professional you can spend some cash and check out http://www.imagingscience.com/ and find a trained ISF calibrator in your area, for some basic tuning you can purchase and AVIA or Video Essentials DVD for aprox 30-40 bucks a piece (check out the deals part of this forum for a good price), and if you want to tweak your set yourself check out http://www.hdtvoice.com/voice/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=320 these threads offer good tweaks with many details on how to go about doing them.

An ISF calibrator will no doubt give you the best picture gauranteed, but it can cost you a couple hundred. But since it seems like you are more than capable to work with the set yourself I recommend checking out the tweaks section of this forum.

Good luck!
