View Full Version : Site Slow?
I've noticed that the site has been pretty slow on occasion the past couple of days.
I checked the number of people logged on and it bears no direct relationship to that.
Anyone else notice? (around noon & around 3PM, especially)
It's not me because I've got 1.7Mb/sec ADSL (work), or 1Mb/sec cable (home) and other sites are fast.
Here's a great site to test bandwidth:

i have noticed some speed issues but not often at all...mostly waiting for the gallery pics to show...im usually checking posts at work 12-4..we are on T1 connection
I have noticed it also. I also agree it doesn't seem to have any relationship to how many people are logged on. My connection at home and work are fast and I don't see a problem with other sites at the same time.
Could be the server that HDTVoice uses? Could be something else that slows the server down.

Try 28,800!!! Everything is slow to me so I can never tell the difference. I build 56k's, ISDN's, and T1's for customers all the time as my job at the local telco but do you think I could get one? It's just the price I pay for living on 5 acres 10 miles from town. I hear the Direcway satellite is unreliable.

It depends on your geographical locations, really. The dish is much larger, so it is more susceptible to wind moving it or repositioning it...and just like any satellite broadcast, you need a CLEAR line of sight. If you get frequent cloudy/murky/stormy days you'll have many days of inconsistent or even broken connection speeds.
As far as this site being slow, I haven't noticed it so far. Though I'm crawling around at 56,600, so I'm not too far ahead of andy

I guess its that new worm that is out that is suppose to slow down the internet. I am at work and we have are own dedicated satellite that are company uses for are web support. I am the only one hear at times at night and it runs slow for me as well. I eard about the worm on tv today though. Things seem to be fine right now though.

It seems to be OK again now. I was using a T1 from Chicago on Thursday and it was a PIG. On Friday it wasn't any better from Toronto (ADSL 1.7Mb/sec and Cable 1.0Mb/sec). Must have been some sort of temporary server problem for a couple of days. Thanks for the feedback.
Edit. - Wouldn't you know, 10 minutes after I posted, the site became a PIG again. Oh well, I'll just go away and come back later....

Yeah its been running really slow today. Must be that worm going around the net still who knows.
Yes, very slow today. 3PM was really bad. I don't think it's that worm because it was slow before that. Other sites I visit are not slow. Perhaps it's the server - any comments AdminJoe?

Ive been monitoring the site a bit, and I reduced a few things in the control panel. Let me know in a few days if things get better.
Down the road I will move this box to a new server, but I am broke right now, so things have to wait. If you guys have any suggestions for raising some money, let me know.

was it just me, or did i read about a virus slowing down the internet, globally? im on TW Roadrunner and my connections were as slow as AOL.
The past few days the site has been slow again at certain times. I find it slows down a lot around 2-3PM (EST) consistently for some reason....
Today, I could not get to the site at all at that time and found the same thing a couple of days last week. The rest of the time, everything seems to be OK, but mid afternoon must be "busy" or something....
Just thought I'd provide some feedback...
Now that I know, I will try to avoid that time...

As to the site being slow...has anybody else noticed a relatively HUGE slowdown in the questions being asked within the past 4-5 days? Not many questions asked...and even fewer answers made.
Yesterday (2/17) at noon I logged onto the site. I composed a reply to a thread but was not able to post it. Tried multiple times to log back onto the site without success.

Almost every site I have visited the past 2-3 days has been incredibly S----L----O----W. I can hardly stand it! Have cable modem connection via Mediacom. I'm usually "smokin" but not lately . . . . . . really hurting my online "window" shopping for new home theater entertainment center and new furniture.
Whatever it is slowing down the internet I hope it stops SOON!!!
Qwackertoo,
Have you tried Bandwidthplace.com (http://www.bandwidthplace.com) . A quick bandwidth test lets you know for sure its not your cable connection or your system.
I've seen no change in my connection speed lately, about 2.2-2.4 mbits. Comcast cable.
Lee
The connection speed is erratic. I think it may depend on server routing and it may not be this site.
I've noticed that all my Canadian sites are normal, while a very few US ones are slow, while others are normal. It's also dependent upon the time I'm on. I haven't detected a pattern yet, but perhaps portions of the internet are having problems.
Lee, I'm jealous. I have a friend in Calgary on Shaw cable who also gets those types of speeds. I used to get them too - 4 years ago. Now it's typically closer to 700k - 1 Meg for me - too many people in my area I guess.
This speed is not usually the limiting factor anyway since very few sites can "send" that fast, but it is nice to know... I'm only paying US$30/mo, so I can't complain...

I too have noticed a dramatic slowdown at times.
Has anyone run a traceroute to see where the bottleneck is?
Edit:
Although this site doesn't seem slow right now, I ran a traceroute out of curiosity. From me to here the slowdown occurs through the sprintlink.net routers. The TTL's were 3-4 times slower through them.
Anyone else?

"My speed has progressively gone DOWN hill today, just checked again and it was 15.3 Kb."
That's not right. You don't have Kazaa (sp?) or something like that downloading files in the background?? I'd do a little checking to be sure its not something in your computer and then give the cable company a call. Do you use a router in conjunction with your cable modem? Tell us your setup, there seems to be a number of people here who can probably help. This PC (political correctness) thing is getting to me. I was going to say 'guys' and put people in there instead. :(
"I'm only paying US$30/mo, so I can't complain..."
Geez, they, Comcast, just raised ours up to US $55  and I don't even get basic cable from them. I ought to get basic cable just for the heck of it. It would cost the same.
When Comcast took over from AT&T they must have taken some stops out?? We used to max out at 1.5mbits. We also noticed our upload has about doubled to 243k.
"Sorry I aint braggin here or nothing but I get 3.1 up to 3.3 on Cox."
I didn't realize cable could go that fast  !

I have a LinkSys router and it is going to my computer and one in each of the kids rooms and my husbands computer in the computer room. He re-wired everything under the house about 2 weeks ago but my troubles just started the other day after all the bad weather. I did get a little upset when he had crammed the cable modem and the linksys router into this little space at his computer desking FULL WELL KNOWING when the cable modem goes out that I have to unplug it from the back and replug in to "reset" it. Perhaps I might have jarred something loose . . . . ooops . . . . . I won't tell him that part! Should I just tell him to recheck the connections without admitting I handled the stuff a bit rough??? :o

Deana,
Something is wrong. Even with 4 computers going the router should split the bandwith 4 ways ( I believe).
When your bandwidth drops try running the bandwidth test from each of the other computers. Then try disconnecting all but yours ( or one ) from the router and try again. You should be able to tell from the 'link activity' LED if there is activity on the other computers. Try calling the cable company when the problem is happening. AT&T was always pretty helpful about checking for problems, don't know how Comcast will be.
Check the following link for the proper wiring of the RJ45 connectors: http://www.elrcastor.com/rj45.html I've seen many people (and companies) wire the cables pair for pair/pin for pin. All four pairs are connected but we only use pins 1/2 and 3/6. Notice the connector wiring on the left on the link. CAT5 Standard Patch Cord. The green/green white are hooked to pins 3 and 6. I get a 'split pair' error on my analyzer if not wired like the drawing. You often find that the oranges are connected to 1/2 and the greens are connected to pins 3/4, WRONG.
Split pairs are normally not a problem for 10mbits but can cause all sorts or 'weird' problems for 100mbits.
Sorry for getting technical. I'm not a networking professional, we just use a network between the computers in our wafer processing equipment.

You guys that are getting great speeds are reflecting that you are on the same trunk as the test is (the test is in Texas... you are in OK, correct?)
I get the same results when I use the TOAST.NET speed tests... OUTRAGEOUS speeds, but I use the Toledo, OH trunk and I am in Lansing, MI...
You should try the TOAST.NET speed test and average the two, maybe.
Although I do know how you feel... I am paying $100/mo for my service as it is business class cable modem service (static IP, unlimited up and down, different freq. than the home surfers, fast response time, etc.)... I couldn't live without it now!

Thank heavens the answer is YES!!! Just ran the test again since I saw this thread pop back up and was a 1.9.
I told my husband something was horribly wrong with our speed and he wasn't in a very good mood or didn't appreciate my complaining about our little home linked system and said "Well its working isn't it? Then its fine!". I went ahead to bed and I guess later that night he was feeling guilting or whatever and went and checked a few things and reset the router and voila I'm back moving fast as I was before, maybe not as fast as mike but better than dial-up!

How are you measuring your up and down speed?
Bandwidth Place (http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/) has tests for both upstream and downstream. You have to fill out a little survey but its a good site.

Thanks, Ldogg.
I've used all the speed tests mentioned here, as well as a couple of others, and the best I'm getting is 1.6 (they are all showing about the same). I always thought my connection was pretty fast, but you guys are making me green with envy.
My cable is split several ways and that may account for some of the results. Do any of you think this will affect my HD PQ when I finally get an HD STB later this year? Should I have the cable company drop another line into the house to minimize the splits?
Some of those will go away when my daughter and her 3 computers leave in October, so maybe I should just wait and see how that affects my speeds before I do anything.
Also, should I expect my wireless notebook to be slightly slower? It always has been compared to a desktop hard-wired to the same router, but now I'm not so sure I don't have other issues to deal with. Would it be worthwhile to upgrade the router, PCMCIA card, etc., to the 2.4 Ghz stuff?
Comments anyone?
Broadband cable should be the first "drop" inside the house. HDTV should be second. Just have the cable tech check the signal strength when you get HDTV, appropriate splitters (good ones) usually take care of the rest.
Just for kicks, I changed things around adversely affecting the signal by 10dB (on HDTV and broadband) and noticed no difference in speed or picture quality.
The signal strength for HDTV should be greater than -10dB, the closer to zero dB, the better. If you have a good signal here, the broadband should be fine.
mikehbkwm

i currently live in a apt.... when we setup the HD service the tech added an amp once he did that i was getting a little to much so then we put on a splitter 3.5db and perfect...... everythings all good...............
Forgot to mention the FAQ post on Cables and Splitters (not the one on cables & connections). See it for more details on how to properly cable your house.

Thanks, 57U. I didn't really think some of that would make much difference as I think my speed is what it is and the signal strengths are ok. But, a friend is having a second drop (and SA3270HD) installed next weekend (8/9), so I should be able to get some feedback there too. Also, I will be sure to have the signal strength, etc., checked when I get the STB and get some of these splits out of here.
BTW. He's paying the same price for the 3270 as he would have for the SA3100HD from Cox, $500 plus $50 install (which I think is a total rip-off). We aren't sure which model 3270 it will be yet, they make 3 different ones. Has Rogers Cable said anything about getting the 3250 yet?

The site was slow for much of the day yesterday for me too. Around 11PM - Midnight (EDT) last night I couldn't get to the site at all (got back on after midnight). Site's still a little slow this morning, but it seems to be working.

When that happens I just browse all the forums for the 'Last Post Date'.
I think it happens when you are viewing new posts and you log off or the system freezes. When you log back on the posts have been marked read.
Instead of marking all forums read, I wish there was a setting to mark the threads read as you go through them. I guess we are never satisfied :)

I've not encountered the problem you mention, unless I'm viewing the "new posts" , get "knocked off" and then can't get back in within about 20 minutes. (there's some time limit).
If you can get back to the site fairly quickly, your "new posts" are still there. If not, you have to search manually.

Anyone else having problems today?
It's definitely been acting slow for me today. I just tested my cable speed and it's at 2.9mb/s and any other site is wicked fast. Not sure what's going on.
Edit: BUT, it is very sporadic. One second I'm waiting forever for a screen, the next pops up instantly.
Note: As an example - the first time I tried to post this reply - BAM - fast as lightning. When I tried to post the "Edit", I got the "Page Not Found" error... Go figure!
For some reason I always find the site slow around 3-5PM ET. Perhaps it's internet traffic through a hub nearby HDTVoice? This site is one of the slower ones I go to. I thought it was going to speed up with the new server?
Edit - just got a "connection failure". Then tried again and it's working. Definitely erratic.
I thought it was going to speed up with the new server?
Did that ever happen?

Gawd, the site is slow. I'm able to do a couple of minutes work between screen updates....
Wouldn't you know. As soon as I type this, the site is back to "normal" - which is still one of the slowest sites I go to.
Very slow around mid day. 2-3-04 Actually locked me up a few times.
