View Full Version : Anyone Else Have Problems With Toshiba "HD" "Ready" Big Screens?

I was just curious, after going through a couple of weeks of h*ll with my old set and the cable and satellite companies here.

I bought a new Toshiba #TN50X81 back in mid-2000 as the centerpiece of my home theatre system, thinking, because it said it was "HD Ready" that I'd eventually get an HD box and all would be well. Wrong.

I found out with cable that my set would show HD alright, but I couldn't change the aspect ratio. My favorite local a/v gurus couldn't do anything to help me and Toshiba confirmed that there was no way to change the aspect ratio - it was preset.

After canning cable (for other reasons) and buying the new Hitachi, it made me wonder how many other people bought similar Toshiba models and had the same rude awakening as me.

Anyone else out there have this problem?

Most people would have the "problem" you describe. Very few TVs allow you to use the stretch modes when you have an HD input. Some won't even let you stretch component inputs, whether HD or 480P.

I know that the new "82" series Toshiba do allow you to use most of the stretch modes, not sure about the new Hitachi models. All of this will soon be moot when:

1. There is more actual HD, than that stupid upconverted 4:3 stuff.

2. When the new STBs come out with stretch modes built in.

If you use a Dish Network 6000 HD receiver., it will do the strech modes for you.

The Toshiba never displayed 16:9 correctly, that was the problem. No way to change the aspect ratio at all because there wasn't a button for that.

It's all 'solved' now because I bought the Hitachi and have Direct HD.

Just wondering if there were any others that had that particular Toshiba that discovered the same thing.

Thanks! :D

I have the Toshiba 50HX81 with the Zenith SAT520. 1080 and 720 (converted to 1080) look great and there is no need to change the aspect ratio. When its 480, such as FOX widescreen, I can change the aspect ratio though the Zenith (either widescreen, panorama, or zoom). I can also change the aspect ratio on the toshiba from full, to theater 1, 2, 3, or normal. However, when watching the local digital broadcasts- like the local news- I cannot change the aspect ratio with the Zenith. I also run the Zenith in hybrid 1, which converts the 720 to 1080.

Was the original Toshiba you purchased in mid-2000 a 4:3 television? Is that why 16:9 was never displayed correctly?

I guess that is the difference - you were able to change your aspect ratio with the Zenith...........I couldn't. I'm sure since 2000, Toshiba has realized they needed a button on the remote so that users can change the aspect on the set and not thru some other outside source. Anyway, someone else is enjoying the Toshiba now...... ;)
