Ok...maybe I am just a moron, but it looks like the Super Bowl is being broadcast in 720P....isn't that just for Plasma. Most of our HDTV's only get 480P and 1080i...correct?? So will we get to see this game in High Def? I dont want to have people over, and then the game look like crap. Thanks for the help.

The Super Bowl IS in 720p, because ABC uses 720p format for HD. Almost ALL HDTVs will handle 720p... HOW they handle it is the question.

If they cannot directly show 720p, they will up/down/side convert it into 1080i. However, almost ALL HD sets will give you your glorious picture for the superbowl.

Have you been able to watch any HD programming on your ABC affiliate so far on your HDTV? If so, your TV will handle it. If not...

You need to have been watching ABC-HD by now. If not, you probably won't be able to tell until kick-off.

Mission Impossible 2 looked pretty good last night on ABCHD........had the bars at the top and bottom of my screen. Is that how the SuperBowl will look or will it cover the whole 16:9?

:(

You were just watching MI:2 in the OAR of 2.35:1 (or something similar), that ratio is a bit more wide than 16:9 (which is approx 1.777777777777:1).

So long as ABC records the Superbowl using High Definition cameras (which they are supposed to) the broadcast will be 16:9, and you'll get 100% of your screen chocked full of Super Bowl goodness!

Could you be more specific? :p

The last significant digit should have been an 8 instead of a 7, although after the 3rd significant digit they became insignificant.

Yeah yeah yeah yeah...it's true but that's subjective. Technically the 7 is repeating, so it'd never end...but I don't really care to get into the whole mathematics business!

Tom...how should I be more specific?

I guess, to clarify, all cinematic film is measured in a numerical ratio of something to one ratio; common ratios are 1.85:1 and 2.35:1, though you'll occasionally see some weird ratios out there.

Now Televisions, for some God-aweful reason, are measured in the same sort of ratio, though they don't break it down into a something to 1 ratio, they leave it in whole numbers (like 4:3 and 16:9)

Should you take your television's screen size and divide 16 by 9, you will have porportionally 1.78:1 as your TV's screen ratio.

When watching movies like MI:2 which have an original aspect ratio (OAR) of 2.35:1, you will have more inches horizontally than vertically to display on your 1.78:1 television...so you will have the notorious "black bars" even though you've got a wide-screen movie.

The other popular film ratio of 1.85:1 will fill 100% of a 16:9 Television's screen, so there's no worries with them.

Now the Superbowl is being filmed using High Definition broadcast cameras, which record the information maintaining the 16:9 high definition standard.
