Before you start archiving all your VCR tapes onto DVD-R/RW's or making copies of stuff for your friends, I'd highly advise you make sure the DVD player you intend on putting those discs in is compatible with the DVD-R/RW format.
VHS may be old, bulky and out-dated technology but it had been standardized over 20 years ago.
Unfortunately there are still many formats available for DVD recording:
DVD+R
DVD+RW
DVD-R
DVD-RW
and
DVD-RAM
A quick check on the compatible DVD player section on http://www.vcdeasy.com/ will show you which DVD players will play those recorded DVD-R and DVD-RW discs that the Panasonic makes.

You bring up a very valid point. I took a homemade DVD (that I burned on my Sony Vaio) (DVD-R) to the store I was shopping for the dvd recorder. I had the salesman put it in there to make sure the Pana unit and the Sony dvd player I got would play it. I found out the hard way that my old Toshiba 6-disc changer wouldn't play certain dvd's. Live and learn.
It is nice to push a button and burn a dvd right then and there of what you are watching and replay it almost immediately.
