Hello all...... I have a Samsung HD TV 32" and am having problems switiching between component 1 and the HDMI component. the main issue i am having is that the box is the the comcast HD box is set to 1080i and when i switch from componet 1 to the HDMI component all of the non hd channels apear in letter boxes. how can i my regular channels to not appear in letter boxes when viewing TV through the HDMI component?
You need to set the Motorola STB to send 480i/p for the SD channels. This is done by setting the 4:3 override to 480i or p. Turn the STB off and hit the menu button right away. See the HDTV FAQ "Motorola STBs".
Unfortunately many Samsungs do not accept 480i or p via HDMI, so if that's the case, you'll need to use component video cables.
I'm actually confused by your question of switching between component 1 and HDMI. Do you have two different items connected to the TV? Or just the STB? If just the STB, then you should only use one connection type for video, otherwise the STB/TV can get confused. See the HDTV FAQ "DVI/HDMI Information".

I use to have the an HDMI cable and the regular component connection. i scrappped the HDMI and am using the component cables now. If whats hould be the optimal setting for the comcast HD box.
im new to this sorry.
Set the Box to output 720P for the HD channels and 480i or 480P for the SD channels (4:3 override).
Your TV failed the bobbing test, so don't use 1080i.

I have a Samsung LN 4692D (46" LCD, 1366x768). It has an internal atsc/ntsc HD tuner. I also recently got a comcast HD cable box so I get the HD channels, and I set it to 720p.
When I turn to an HD source, such as ESPNHD, is there any sort of message that is supposed to pop up informing me that the TV is, in fact, outputting an HD signal?
I ask this because when I was at CC, they would demonstrate the difference between HD and non HD by changing the channel from one source to another. When they clicked back to the HD source, a little blue message box popped up saying "digital dolby 5.1," and the guy said that that message indicated it was now in high def. The TV he used was a Samsung LCD, although it was a smaller model. When I flip around to my high def channels, I get no blue box. I just want to make sure that my atsc tuner is working properly.
Is there an "info" button on the remote? It should tell the incoming signal. DD5.1 has nothing to do with HD since some SD channels can have DD5.1. See the HDTV FAQ "What's available in DD5.1". It is true that much HD programming is DD5.1, but not all is and it's certainly no way to tell if you're receiving HD. Salespeople!!!
The "blue box" comes up on some TVs if you change formats - from 480i to 1080i...
See also the HDTV FAQ "Motorola STBs" in order to properly set it up, perhaps putting the 4:3 override to 480i or 480P. If the STB is only outputting 720P, then you won't see the "blue box" since there is no format change.
See also FAQ "What's on in HD".

Your internal ATSC tuner has nothing to do with the HD cable box. ATSC is for OTA (antenna).
As long as the cable box is set to output 720p or 1080i, connected to the TV via component, DVI or HDMI cables and you select an HD channel, you are getting HD (if the program is in fact an HD program).
Even if you could see an informational display, it would always show "720p" anyway since that what you set the cable box to send to the TV. ;)
